Bottom line best financial solution. Cheaper truck price and they all have a keyed ignition.

I wouldn't completely rule it out especially since the parts already exist on other Tacomas but it'd be a lot of work. Best of luck if you choose to take this route and take plenty of pictures because I'm sure you aren't the only one who has considered this. You could always buy a 2nd Gen if you really want higher package:notsure:

As long as the truck is running you can drive off without the keys. Done it in my wife’s 2014 Highlander before as a test.

Traded in my 2016 Rubicon for the Tacoma TRD Sport for three reasons: MT, normal key to start it, and towing capacity. Hate the push button start on wife's Renegade, to me it is just a PITA with that thing.

Yup. I think that is one place that Toyota really failed.

Discovered accidentally, dropped the wife at the door while I parked, she had the key in her purse, I was not able to lock it till I found her in the store and went back out to the lot with the remote. Wife's Rav is the same way, once started you can drive it all over till you shut it off. Once you have turned it off the key must be in range before you can start it again. o_O

Get a remote starter the ECU will shut down the engine when a door opens to prevent theft.

    Possible solution...

For the key fob/PTS they should have put a gear lock on it via ecu preventing it from shifting out of park. If key fob is not detected vehicle stays in park and/or engine turns off then shifts to park once 0 mph is reached thus immobilizing the vehicle. This would help prevent theft as well as leaving the key behind.
Keep the engine shut off for remote start in place and both PTS and keyed vehicles are protected.

Worst reason ever.... put them in your pocket / purse, keep them there, forever... Don't take them out when you get in or out of your vehicle (because duh, you don't have to), and then you'll never have that problem

Having a vehicle shut off due to loss of signal from a proximity key creates an extremely hazardous situation. The truck beeping and telling you on the dash that a key is not detected seems sensible enough to me.

Let me ask you this, why do you want to switch it out if you get a tacoma that has it?

I doubt the beep will slow a thief.

Unless throwing the fob out while at high speed, the proximity loss should be at low speed. Fob proximity range is about 3 foot or less, and with TSS (with brake assist), standard on all Toyota vehicles now I think, that could also be activated to stop the vehicle in that 3 foot lurch at 90 mph. I know my truck complains the key is not there when I start it and walk all the way across the width of my wife's Rav 4 to kiss her goodbye in the mornings.

Install a keyless entry lock into your residence, problem solved. The world is going to NFR for everything, soon all one will need is a smartphone for all keys, credit cards, etc... (you don’t even need to visit the check in desk at most Marriott hotels now, just check in with your smartphone and it becomes your key).

I didn't realize pts was supposed to be an anti theft device as well. Sorry. It seems like it does enough as is with needing to confirm the signal by pressing the button with remote staters when the door is opened. People complain about having to do that as is.

I still don't want vehicles on the road that randomly stop on their own at any speed. Losing control of the vehicle because someone either forgot their keys, or heaven forbid the battery in the key gets weak, or someone's key makes it into some form of RFID range limiting or blocking situation is all bad. Having the vehicle stolen while idling seems like the least likely scenario to plan for. Besides, in my mind personal responsibility has to be excersized at some point.

I dunno, I just don't see the need to risk mine or others safety over a car.

    :threadjacked:

This is not the place (thread) to debate the merits or needs of anti theft.

OP wanted information on removing PTS and replace with a keyed ignition. Unfortunately we went off on a tangent. I am removing myself from this thread and discussion. :sorry:

    Simple solution:
    1. Find tech savvy SR owner (they always want TRD tech)
    2. Have them swap out all keyswitch/PTS parts with you.
    3. Both of you are happy.

I’m honestly curious how people that leave push button start vehicles running think that having a key is going to fix that. If you are that forgetful that you can actually walk away from a running vehicle without turning it off, you probably shouldn’t be driving at all.

A key isn’t going to help you. The action of pushing a button is no different then twisting a key. If you can’t push a button you won’t be turning a key either.

Don't kill it if you lose signal but rather prevent shifting it of park. Both problems solved. Can't steal a vehicle if you can't shift it out of park.

While we’re on the topic. How does a push start perform on an almost dead battery? Like when you go to start a car after sitting for a month. If it were in a traditional ignition you can finesse the key to try to get the engine to turn. Curious...

Correct, buy the SR and then buy all of exact upgrades to bring it up to an OR. Perfect solution. Much cheaper...lol
