What is the trick to remove the shift lever from a 5-speed transmission? I am in the process of trans removal for a clutch assembly change. I have the boot removed and can see the spring around the shift lever, but I cannot figure out what needs to move or how to get the lever out.

Please help!! yes, I did a search.

    thank you.

After the retaining clip is out, it should just pull out.

Push down and twist, then it pops out.

It sucks even more putting it back it, the metal around the outside always cuts my thumbs up

I could not get it move, so i removed the 6 bolts holding its housing to the tranny. It went back in easily.

I always push down with needle nose pliers and twist. I agree installing it is a PITA.

Using your thumbs and a cloth to provide some cushioning and grab, it is actually fairly easy.

Push down and CCW to remove.

Push down and CW to install.

Do yourself a favor and replace the shifter ball bushings while you have it apart. Marlin Crawler or your local dealer has them.
