Anyone got any tips for pressing out u-joints without destroying them? I have been using a rented ball joint press from autozone to try to change/check the u-joints in the rear driveshaft of my 2002 Double Cab. I can get one cap off easily, but pressing the other cap back through the other side has been trouble some. Because the yokes are not square (straight), the cap on the other side keeps going in crooked any binding up.

The method I am using is featured in the second half of this video:

Anyway - I guess I could take a grinder to them and be done with it, but I didn't want to destroy the joints if they were still good (chasing a humming sound, so not sure the joints are bad).

Anyone got any tips on this?

I never removed any that were not being replaced.

I keep saying I am going to build something to hold hold the yokes and be able to press them out straight .

Since I don`t change them that often I always forget .

Maybe with help to hold things it might work better

Depending on your mileage, it might be a wheel bearing.

A new bolt here, a new bolt there, a new bolt everywhere.
I have a 4x4 that I set them on then take a cheapO socket and place it backwards against the joint and 2 or 3 blows from a 4lb mallet and one side is out l. Then I do the same to the other and I am good
