Recent word around the water cooler is that Potts is getting shut down by the landowners.

Wouldnt be too surprised. Ive had my fears that the whole lonliest hwy promotion and the stuff your friend Sydney is doing might result in something like that. Tragedy of the commons.

I didnt want to go into too much detail for that exact kinda reason. Sucks though.

Heading out to Kingston for memorial weekend. Will have to make a trip out there and see whats up.

Not my friend, but I agree looking back now I wouldn't have helped with the Google thing. However I feel that social media has exploited more of the hidden spots than the one location the camera was taken. Maybe I'm wrong though. Still a ton of little known locations out there to enjoy just have to work harder for it.

Oh sorry. Interesting your perspective has changed. Yeah I definitely agree, and thats where I'm at with all of Sydneys stuff, in my eyes they seemed to sell out all these cool spots for tourism, and to me thats a sin haha, but looking now it seems like even theyve changed their tactics, seems like theyre wanting to try to make people work for it now, but maybe thats how theyve been all along and I'm wrong. Either way I know theres more going on with FB and IG than just them but thats like NV backroaders, I take the same approach and I know I sound like a scrooge but damn. I go out to my favorite spot to find it closed or vandalized and it makes me less and less willing to share stuff. Someone cut down an entire steel headframe from a favorite, albeit well known and popular, mine site a few years back, for example. I realize the irony of my sharing here but I don't know...

Just as an FYI to anyone who might consider going over the top from Kingston to Big Creek (or vice-versa), you need to have your truck only. There are some switchbacks up top that aren't trailer-friendly.

How are the current conditions around Humboldt Toiyabe forest? I was going to hit Bob Scott this weekend but the ranger site says it's open starting May 15th. Same with every site near the Austin Ranger station.

Austin Ranger District Office area description
    Big Creek Campground
    Bob Scott Campground
    Columbine Campground
    Kingston Campground
    San Juan Campground

Id really doubt theres snow at bob scott but it may not be open. Plenty of land around though to camp on.

Stampede has come up a lot

They haven't moved the dock....the water would be about 10ft over the top of my truck where I was parking last year.

I called and they said the campgrounds are open but the bathrooms might not be. But then she said even if I can't find anything it's a dispursed camping so I can do that to.

    First time camping in NV!

I went up dog valley few weeks ago and coulnt get to far. I started from nevada side in verdi. I cant tell where you are in the pics to well. I am confused where stampede is, I been seeing signs around truckee for a detour but for the life of me I cant remeber where it is. I went on some good trails by prosser dam, lots of mud. I got up to a view area and could see boca. I dnt know the trails to well I just been out trying to explore. I have a good map for the area so I can get good info on starting areas and such. If your down to get out on some trails I def would go with ya when ever you have time. i should have time not busy at work yet so let me know maybe can meet up. go out have a bbq or some shit. Def need to get people together and hit up the trails.

That crossed my mind but after very little physical activity since October 2014 it felt good to bang these out. Plan is 1 or 2 post holes per night for the next few weeks (as long as my body lets me).

I hear ya. I have a 30 lb digging bar for crap like that. I always dread digging holes in NV.

I was really bummed when I saw they shut down Potts. That was one of my favorites. Sydney and crew aren't all to blame though, and since I've been following her I've never seen her post an actual location to any springs, although it's pretty easy to find them all through Google. I think the whole social media and blogging scene in general ruined all these cool spots. Everyone feels the need to write a blog and a review everywhere they go with a geotag and turn by turn directions so they can get a few hits on their website.

I've seen a lot of CA plates at springs lately too and a lot of them have no clue on etiquette. They setup camp right on top of hot springs so nobody else can use them and are generally pretty rude.
