Yeah. My parents were evacuated at 1:30am Monday and saw the fire burning down the hill from Fountaingrove toward their house as they were leaving and there were no firefighters in their neighborhood.

A DOC fire crew out of Grass Valley arrived shortly after Dad called 911 to let them know the fire was coming down the hill and set a back fire that saved their house. Unfortunately, the fire burned through their neighborhood from the other direction too and many of their neighbors (and my childhood friends and their parents) lost their homes by Monday afternoon. I hauled ass down there Tuesday with supplies for the first responders and essentially bribed my way back into their neighborhood (beef jerky and apple sauce FTW) which was under evac orders still to deliver baby wipes, food, and water to the CalFire and DOC fire crews that were posted up at the end of my parents' court.

Snuck back in again Wednesday and cleared 20+ garbage cans of debris from my parents yard that had blown in during the high winds Sun/Mon, cut another hand line behind their place, dropped a few stressed/dying trees, packed up some items they were unable to grab, and took what I feared would be the last pictures of their house. All day Wednesday the scanner was active with hot spots flaring up in their neighborhood and the forecast called for wind again that evening and into Thursday.

Friday night the mandatory evac order for the section of their neighborhood that didn't burn was lifted. Their house is still standing but they have smoke damage (much easier to deal with than rebuilding). I'm still not sure how their house is still standing while other neighborhoods that I never thought would be at risk in an event like this are decimated.

Also, props to USAA Insurance. They were set up with their disaster response bus and my parents got in to make a claim Saturday for the smoke damage. By Saturday evening USAA had already deposited the funds into their account so they can move forward with remediation and get back into their home. My parents will be housing 2 other families that lost their homes while they seek long term housing so the sooner they can get the house cleaned the better to get these people out of the shelters.

Man, that is nuts. Glad that a little good fortune shined on your family and best of luck with getting life back in track after all that.

They'll be fine. I have a buddy down there that lost his home and his business. It's going to take a long time for the region to rebuild.

Which fire? There are several burning in NCal at the moment.

They think the Tubbs fire, which burned from Calistoga into Santa Rosa and is responsible for most of the fatalities, was caused by downed power lines but it has not been confirmed yet. That fire burned something like 12 miles in the first 3 hours.
