Did a hike up to the local SAR hill out by Grimes Point Archeological Site just to the east of Fallabama, pretty cool. Looks like ol Maverick had a rough landing!

That is very interesting, and a great thing for the state to uphold with the direction its heading.

I just got back home after spending 5 days in the eastern ruby mountains chasing a sparsely numbered elk population that the state is trying to eliminate. Most of that forest and BLM land is not accessible (without a couple days pack in) because of private ranches. After unsuccessfully hiking our asses off for 3 days in some of the steepest stuff I have been on, we were glassing from the main road (ruby valley rd) up into some of the canyons and a rancher happened by, we chatted and he gladly offered us access to (and through) all of his property. He then said most of his neighbors will do the same. I told him I felt weird knocking on people's doors asking them a question like that, he chuckled a little and said they would be glad to meet respectful hunters (and recreationalist) and they REALLY like when people ask for permission to cross their property. We proceeded to knock on some doors and it was a crazy humbling experience to meet some of these people. True salt of the earth out there. Kind of a depressing reminder of how shitty some people treat each other around town here in Reno.

Basically what I'm saying is even if it is your "legal right" or whatever it's always best to talk with landowners first. (Kind of reminds me of those dickheads that walk around with loaded rifles in public areas on YouTube to provoke police) if you cross a gate that says no trespassing or has orange paint on fence posts without permission, you are simply asking for trouble.

By doing this I met some great people who asked for my phone number so they can call me when the elk are in the area (the elk are destructive to the alfalfa fields) which I never would have asked for or expected. I also learned a great deal about the area in general, and heard some great stories from some super nice people who were just happy to b.s. with a fellow Nevadan.

Anyone know how long after burning man before the playa empties out?

Trying to plan a quick weekend trip with the kids to launch some rockets (totally age appropriate for a 2 and 4 year old :anonymous:).

Couple weeks after you’ll be good. The BM org is out there a month or more after cleaning up but it’s just a small group of people.

I have seen vagrants out there bumming around a month or more after BM, usually at Trego.

I agree it’s always best to ask because at the end of the day it’s still their private property even though there may be an easement.

I think this is more to address the few asshole land owners out there that claim public roads going through their property as private and put up no trespassing signs and/or gates to limit access. One example I can think of is the property owner up on Peavine on Hawk Meadow trail. I’ve heard numerous reports of him confronting people driving through.

Like you said I’ve always had good encounters with the ranchers in NV. They’re always super friendly when I stop to talk with them and they usually will give you good intel on the area.

Goes back to the same damn thing our parents (hopefully) taught us as youngsters - "do unto others".

You grab the skull & antlers? Don't know the local game regs well enough, but usually harvesting bits and pieces off a long-dead critter is legal.

Took the oldest fishing yesterday up to Silver Creek (hot hot hot, zero action) and then stopped at Markleeville Creek on the way home, trying to hopefully put her on some stupid, hungry, hatchery fish. She tries like hell, but she couldn't catch a cold in the middle of winter. :/ Best part of her day was the cold root beer from the general store.

Yep. In process of trying to "bring it back to life":cookiemonster:

If it wasn't so symmetrical and tall I probably wouldn't bother but it really is a nice deer. I'm assuming wounded by hunter.20190804_161532.jpg

Yeah, that deer looks like he was in the prime of his life. Almost total waste of an animal to let that happen, but I know "shit happens", despite best efforts. Glad you're going to put bits and pieces to good use. I wonder if any of the custom knife builders would take/buy/barter larger bones to use as handle scales?

Very dilute (10:1) bleach solutions help with the tougher bits and the cranial cavity (fats). I'm not sure how the pros clean out the brains, but that solution worked great on my bear skull. Bonus points because it inhibits bacteria, so you don't end up stinking out the neighborhood. Treated it afterwards with some 10-weight hydrogen peroxide to get the staining out and give it that classic sun-bleached look.

Always wanted to try dermestid(sp?) beetles, but apparently it's a bunch of work to develop and maintain a colony.

honestly I wouldnt use bleach solution, it keeps breaking down the skull, from what I've read. Something like that its best to keep it whole not cut up into pieces.

I never had a problem with it. Maybe folks don't dilute it enough, but I have plenty of things I've bleached over the years that are holding up just fine.

I’m thinking of doing an overnight trip to Black Rock this weekend Saturday night if anyone wants to meet up. Temps look to be in the low 80s so perfect weather.
