The place I'm in now has mini-splits (3 zone/units) and so far no complaints, however we've mainly heated with wood all winter. @skidooman has a good amount of experience.

The great part about mini splits is you don't get peaks and valleys with temperature. They might run all the time but they only run enough to maintain desired temperature. Everything in them is variable so they are pretty dang efficient and quiet. If you decide on a multi zone you can put an air handler in each space and they can be kept at different temperatures. Or if you have the attic space you can put a ducted air handler which is more like a forced air system. With residential you can't heat and cool at the same time, unless you have 3 phase power. Text me or call me if you want. I'll spew all the useless info you want.

I have a little experience.

I installed a three head mini split in my last house. It worked great even down to low single digit temps for heating. Also kept the uninsulated 40’s house cool all summer.

They are pretty easy to install yourself too since they almost all come pre charged.

We heat a log cabin. No central heat. We use a Vornado brand fan 24/7 to circulate air. They outlast the 5 year warranty.

Not too bad actually. It's south facing so as soon as the sun hits it the snow is gone. But we also salt it

Oh very true! that’s smart to salt it. Literally would be a slip in slide into the main road lol

Oh yeah for sure. Happened a couple times. Having studded tires also helps
