Does anyone local happen to have a used 255/85r16 tire I could buy off them? I just ordered some new tires and want to have a matching (in size) spare but I hate buying a brand new tire just for a spare.

You could do it old school...
Rotate a 5th new one when you rotate the tires. Used to do that before small spares were invented.

Yeah then I need to buy another rim and all that. I’ve always just moved a worn out tire to the spare but now I’m changing sizes so I don’t have one. I can probably keep the 265/75 as a spare if needed. I’ll have to keep an eye out on marketplace too but 255/85 isn’t a super popular size.

I resemble that remark! But to be honest, I don't think weight is the primary issue - I'm 175lbs and even with my boys and our ski gear (and 120lbs of sand over the rear axle) I doubt we're tipping the scales over 450lbs of load.

I've come to the conclusion that the issue is likely the fact that our 95% of our trips are in town (within 5 miles) in Incline Village with lots of stop and go and very little driving at cruising speed.

Definitely pushing me toward a lighter C load rated summer MT tire to keep unsprung weight down.

I stopped paying attention to gas mileage but I don't usually get above 13mpg, even with a relatively light 33" tire and 19lb wheels. I'm either driving in town, or off road, and when I am on the highway I have a trailer hitched up or heading up Mt Rose Hwy.

^This. I'm right around 10 mpg. Stopped caring a long time ago. Really only have to pay attention when range (240ish miles per tank) becomes an issue for extended travels outside of regular gas station service.

I’ve been averaging 17.6 mpg driving around Reno or driving up the hill to Tahoe. Mine is stock, but carrying ~600-700 lbs of tools and equipment all the time. I have added the RAS spring to help handle the weight. I would like to move from the SL rated oe tire to a C or E rated tire.

I pretty consistently average 16mpg. 2 inch lift, 265/75-16 load range E, RTT, awning, decked drawers that stay loaded with my tools and recovery gear.

A couple weeks ago while working on the exterior of a house, I saw a bobcat cross the road at Kingsbury. It was cool to see.

Bobcats are rad. In all my years in the mountains I've seen 8 lions, but only 3 bobcats. All in the same year, in the same range. One was hunting a deer fawn and was unsuccessful. A month or so later I watched two others work together to kill a fawn.
