It’s been a while since I’ve been up there but it’s a lot easier to go up from the Gold Ranch side along the railroad tracks.

First time heading up to bowman, is it faster from reno to go the 89 route or through emigrant?

Im not positive which is truly faster, but personally I prefer the shorter and less windy route from 89 through Jackson Meadows. From 20 to Bowman is some really windy road but a bit less gravel. Could always loop it and decide which you prefer for next time, if so i'd take the route off 20 there, and then past it and back to 89.
Bowman has been too 'found' over the last few years so I rarely head out there or the surrounding areas any more as they're generally fairly trafficked and the camp spots taken or wrecked by inconsiderate people.

Let me know which way ends up being best. Recently after pondering Gaia gps maps I figured I want to get out there before summers over and drive/hike and explore. Mainly wanting to get to these areas cus small mountain lake=cool
    upload_2024-8-3_0-38-56.png

The one thing I'm bad about maps and planning is, looking at this, I cant tell If Il be able to drive closer than FR 17. KINDA looks like you can get to Feeley? Or like, Can you drive to Grouse Ridge campground or are those trails hike only?

    upload_2024-8-3_0-43-22.png

And over on this side Can you drive those "jeep roads" to near french lake or that other small circled lake? Last time I was out that way most gates were closed and snow was left.

I need me a day or two to aimlessly explore that area in the truck and on foot lol

I agree with Eric on the route from 89 and that bowman has blown up.

Thanks guys! Ended up going through emigrant as thats what google maps suggested and i was past 89 by the time i read these, not a bad drive at all. Will try 89 next time.

I've avoided bowman exactly because of it's reputation, Was invited up as part of a bday party camp trip. I headed up there with the expectation of a bunch of inconsiderate twats and my expectations were definitely met lol, truly a shitshow of humanity, makes me more thankful every time I head east on 80!

We went up to faucheirie yesterday. That road ends there. Pretty sure that green route on the first map you posted is a hiking trail, but looks like you can drive to feeley and grouse ridge based on those maps. Im pretty sure the second map you posted with the route into French lake is part of Fordyce. I've been up on the meadow lake side but never dropped down to french lake from there. That lower lake on the second map you circled is called Baltimore lake. I can definitely tell you that one specifically is hike in only, the hike in is fun, but the lake itself is definitely not that spectacular imo. We came in off trail from the meadow lake area, but there was a semi established hiking trail in the area that we criss crossed as we were coming in.

That whole area is awesome. Definitely nice to spend time up there and you could spend a lifetime exploring it.

Was a little better when the road below Bowman dam was washed out which filtered out some people. Haven’t been to Bowman in a few years either. There’s a couple spots back in that area I still have decent luck at but most of the lakes have been posted online and are frequented by assholes. Harder and harder to find spots that haven’t been ruined.

I actually camped at one of the USFS campgrounds on the west side of Jackson Meadows this weekend with some friends and it was nice. Small campground and only like half full. It was quiet all weekend.

You can drive to Grouse Ridge campground and there Grouse Ridge Trail ties to Round Lake Trail ties to Crooked Lakes Trail

You could also start at the Lindsey Lake campground

All legal forest service roads are usually available here:

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/

but the map is currently broken
