Buying a house in this area is so far fetched of an idea for me, that within 2-3 years I’ll likely purchase an E90 (sedan) M3, or an M2. Or cheaper route is a base model C6 vette off some old dude. Would be way less maintenance cost w that lol

House would be nice but I’ve spent my years that are supposed to be fun in college, in grind mode for 90% of it, so I want a second car once I’m renting a place w a garage

E90 m3 is the one street car I put above the z3m traded my soul for a few years to get a supercharged one with big brakes
    IMG_4034.jpg
I could sell for a z3 but I can’t bring myself to go through with it. Any new cars have to be additions since I can never replace the m3 or Tacoma

but you’re doing it the smart way by focusing on school, and then a house. I’m scared by the time I can afford a house I will only be able to buy in Texas or somewhere else that’s miserable and cheap because nobody wants to be there

I’m saying I’m not focusing on a house lol. I thought about a condo in the next 12 months. HOA fees are too high to make sense for me right now. I’m just gonna reward myself. Aside from my truck, which was thanks to a fat insurance check, I’m super frugal. I’ll get a house if I leave Reno, or once I’ve got a second car.

I’m also eyeing Tennessee for when I can’t snowboard anymore due to knee issues.

E90’s are basically bottomed out now and climbing. So my times running out

My eyes are peeled for e90 335’s 6 speed M sport packages too. Stepping stone that I’d be less scared to romp on since lower $$$. And still great cars. And n54/55 is reliable if cared for and few things taken care of.

Oh ok I got you (sorry I’m still half asleep and brain dead)

however I would avoid a 335i at all cost, I’ve had 2 and my brother has one now. All 3 have spent more time sitting than anything due to problems, and insurance is significantly more for a 335i

Insurance MORE? I’d keep it stock drivetrain if I did to be honest. And use it as a project to teach me things. An M3 I would be mad if it was on stands more than driving. 335 is cheap enough I’d be okay if it’s on stands equal amount of time honestly

It’s definitely a good project just make sure you have AAA towing. I think the insurance is more due to high school kids being able to afford them, and sadly drive them like maniacs

Yea it’s either cheaper car that I’m okay with being a “project” and needing more work. Or something more expensive that I shouldn’t have to worry about ALL the time

BAT values are high. A Mcoupe can definitely be found for mid to upper 20s if you're patient but plan on dumping another 6-10 into it regardless of the mileage. All the rubber bushings on the suspension and subframe need to be replaced, motor and transmission mounts are likely done, plastic bits on the cooling system are brittle so that all needs to be replaced, seat bushings are probably disintegrated leaving the seat with lay when driven aggressively, interior pieces are brittle and NLA so it's a hunt to find replacements, shock towers need reinforcement if you plan to drive aggressively, rear subframe mounts are know to separate from the trunk floor when driven aggressively and the proper repair involves cutting out a section of the trunk floor and welding in a stronger mounting point (some say this is just a problem with the higher powered models but even my 1.9 has spot welds that are failing).

I agree with @Oreo Cat on avoiding the 335. I don't think the N54 is a good motor. A friend had one that had constant problems...blown turbo when it was under warranty, oil consumption issues from day 1, overheating problems. At first the temp issues were on the track only but when he finally dumped it it would overheat on him with regular driving (this was after 2 water pumps, new tstat, and new radiator).

I’m convinced those motors have some golden batches. The two people I’ve talked to about their ownership, has been flying colors lol. The old couple I gave my number to for if they ever wanted to sell their m sport 335xi that I drove at work (and it felt damn good) was 120k miles and they said all they’ve done was the oil filter housing gasket and spark plugs. They’ve had it since 20k they said.

About 3 months ago also drove a m sport e90 6 speed 335 that had 56k on it. Guy was original owner and did the European delivery shit back in the day. Said he was confused why people always ask to buy it. All I told him was “you optioned everything people want and nothing they don’t, and it’s MINT”

One high school friend had one 100k+ miles, did the thermostat once. That’s it. He’s still got it going strong for 5 years now.

every testimony seems to be extreme one way or the other and 0 in between.

    solution: LS3 e90 with M sport package?

I miss my ‘08 335xi 6mt. Had it for 130k miles, replaced both turbos, transfer case, two water pumps, still regret selling it. Gave me shit eating grin every day. But, happy wife happy life.

I have no idea what your finances look like. That said, I'd be more focused on home ownership (and investment diversity in general) over auto ownership. Cars are a terrible investment overall, and auto loans are borderline predatory.

I know it's not fun or "sexy", but put weight into your retirement, property, investments or anything BUT cars. Play your cards right and you could buy multiple autos with cash. I've been pretty lucky and have been able to buy both my vehicles ('00 Taco and '06 GX470) with cash. Also have a few homes up and down the west coast. It was hard work over the last 10 years, but mostly involved knowledge of finances and how not to incur "stupid debt" like car loans.

Hope that helps a bit. If you aren't already, invest in retirement and your future with real estate, not cars.

A lot of work, but, 130k miles is not an insignificant amount. I’ve been driving for almost 6 years now and haven’t even driven 50k miles total on the various vehicles I’ve had.
Im better w my money than 90% of people my age. My trucks paid off. Will be done with college no debt. Already have about 1.5 years of expenses based on current rent/spending cash on hand. And much more invested.

I’ve maxed out my Roth IRA since I was 16.

If I get a second car, it’s going to be bought fully in cash. No way around it.

Even if I don’t get a “big boy” job right away when I graduate, which I’m working on getting that in place and it’s going well, I’ll still go to full time instead of part time and bump my earnings about 30%-40% increase

I don’t know where I’m going to be living long term. And everything I’ve looked into tells me condos and townhomes are just not worth it. Part of me wants to try FHA loan into a multi unit and then have a property management company take care of landlord duties, but I’m still weighing pros and cons of that.

not to sound arrogant, but doing 90% of building my current net worth on my own without help, I’m doing better than most people around my age.

And in re reading this I know I sound like a know-it all. I don’t. Nor do I think I do. I’m just accepting that a second car that could be a project/money pit is for the experience and teaching myself skills around a vehicle, and not an “investment” nor the smart financial choice

Was getting tired of the setup and takedown of the old folding style RTT, so I got a new wedge style unit. CVT was having a pretty good sale, so I picked up a 270⁰ awning too.

Tried it out for the first time this weekend in Long Valley. Original plan was go to east a few hours, but have been battling a small coolant leak that I cant find. Decided to stay close in case something happened.

Only takes a minute or so to get everything set up. Worth every penny.
