I'm going to be repainting my 2006 Tacoma soon after I'm done doing some minor body work and was just looking for some advice when it comes to the best primer and grits to use during prep. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with Magnetic metallic gray 1g3 which is about 220 a gallon and I want to use a premium clear coat but that stuff is like 400 a gallon so I'll probably stick with the finish one that Body shops use. One of my questions starting off is is it a good idea to apply several clear coats or just stick with one or two? And I have a spray gun but just curious if any of you guys or gals have been down this road and have suggestions or cheaper places to buy the authentic paint. Any advice will be much appreciated

Is getting it done at a shop not an option?

I mean of course it's an option but I actually find it therapeutic working on my own vehicle and saving thousands. I just finished redoing my whole AC system and it runs great and I saved about $1100. I actually use it as a work truck so I'm not looking for a factory finish and I'm going deep black high-gloss. I'm actually reading pretty good reviews on using Rustoleum products. It's cheap but if done right and used with the right gun it comes out looking beautiful so that'll probably be my route.

I've painted a few vehicles in my garage. It takes a lot of prep and auto paint isn't cheap.

Look up Kevin Tetz. He has a number of painting videos.

Next, find a local auto paint supply store. I use the PPG Concept line. Also, you need a healthy size compressor - at least 15 CFM at 90psi. Larger the tank the better as compressing air will squeeze the moisture out of it. Water in the lines will ruin the paint job. Always use the same line of paint from the same company to prevent compatibility issues.

2 to 3 coats of a high quality clear will give an excellent deep shine. Read and follow the tech sheets and make sure you use proper PPE.

Here's a cap that I sprayed for @Cativelense last summer and my 63 Falcon that was painted about 10 years ago all in my garage.

Cool. Thx for info. I priced the toyota paint that i wanted and its too much fora work truck daily driver so I'm going with big prep, cheaper paint heavy on clear. I'm a house painter so itll get dinged up in no time but a thick clear will help buff out scuffs. I had a major curl on the edge of my hood and all the local body shop guys said I'd have to buy new hood..nah used a blow torch to heat up area and beat it back. Of course I had to bondo the edge but no new hood. Gotta watch those dudes.. pulled out all my dents. Sanding tomorrow then cleaning it up for prime.

Just a suggestion, lock the garage door, remove the top panel, tape the opening off with plastic, and insert a box fan or two to ventilate. It'll pull the overspray out so it doesn't settle on the paint. Furnace filters in a window or man door for make up air would be best - if not, you'll negativity pressurize the house which isn't necessarily a bad thing when painting a car. Just watch CO build up from the furnace.

Also fellers, what should I use to reapply my Toyota decals? Whatever the factory to used was really thick as in like 16th of an inch maybe an eighth of an inch thick so I'm just wondering what adhesive I should use to ensure that it won't fall off going down the road. I'm definitely not buying TRD stickers to go back on the truck but I would like to clean up my decals and put them back on

I should have it close to done today. I just went and had my need factory rims put on so I got to clean those up and probably go ahead and paint my brake drums cuz they look like hell. After the paint job is said and done all I will need is a new windshield and maybe a new front grill. I wish I knew how to weld because I would make some kind of Billet Style Grill but I haven't welded since high school so that's a no-go. I have the factory Grill but after a minor head on collision it threw everything off so none of my clips line up correctly so I may have to end up just screwing it in which sounds ghetto but again it's my work truck so I'm not looking for a diamond. I was really impressed with Rust-Oleum Automotive primer. It's Sam's down real well but I went to high on my finish sandpaper. 1500 a little high so it makes the pain want to run more so than a eight hundred or a thousand so that's where I messed up because I have a couple of runs on the back side that I'll have to fix today but pictures to come
