I used white touch up paint. It was a brainstorm I had wandering around the local Advanced Auto Parts store because they didn’t have paint pens. The touch up paint has a tip like a marker and a brush. 2 years later the marks on the driveshaft still look like the day I applied them. Just checked the paint and it’s still usable.

Edit: more importantly, make sure you mark the flange and the driveshaft when you remove the stake nut.

    OME and worth every penny.
You can also grease it more efficiently while replacing carrier as you will be able to flex the u-joints fully to work grease to all 4 corners.

Really if they're all in good shape, don't court trouble.

Guy in that video does a lot more work than he needs to.

Don't use chalk to mark it like he did. It's real easy to wipe off accidentally. Use a paint pen or something more permanent.

You don't need to completely remove the drive shaft. Just take the four bolts out of the flange immediately behind the carrier bearing and separate it. Take the two bolts holding the carrier bearing off. Remove the stake nut, flange, and carrier bearing. Reverse order to reassemble.

Also, don't use a screw driver, or anything to remove the stake. If you break the tip off, and it gets stuck in there, you have a mess. Just put your impact driver on it. It will come loose and the stake will come out as it does.

Anyone know the number and order of the washers on the carrier bearing? I have a feeling everything might fall out once I disconnect the flange and I'll be left scratching my head.

    37230E = washer

37120A = also washer (but IIRC it's much thicker).

You just have to pay attention to how YOUR drive shaft was assembled. Pull the staked nut off, and inspect / remove the washer behind it. Then pull the flange. Then check for those washers before you pull the bearing. It's not going to come flying apart once you remove the nut.

Anyone have any detailed pictures of an OEM carrier bearing? This supposedly OEM one I bought on Ebay is looking suspect. The outside has lettering that was scraped off and the outside of the rubber inside of the mount looks a bit unfinished. The bearing inside is stamped KOYO JAPAN 6006Z. Not sure if the inside means anything, but the combination of both make me question if I am getting ripped off. I reached out to the seller. He responded with this...

"Hi, I was told that some of these parts have access material from the molding and manufacturing process that requires removal at the factory.
We get all of our parts from Toyota and Lexus and have sold hundreds of these with no problems. All of our parts also come with manufacturers 12 month warranty."

uh...yeah I would send that back. I got my OEM (Spicer) one off of Amazon via this thread, has the TOYOTA logo stamped on it with part # just like the factory one

the one in your pic doesn't look like it has any grease in it either

What's up with the Spicer carrier bearings? Is there good information confirming that they are identical to the OEM versions sold by Toyota dealers?

Yeah that thread I linked is about how Spicer is the OEM supplier of the Toyota carrier bearing

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/1st-gen-genuine-oem-carrier-bearing-for-79.583219/#post-19412597

Myself and a bunch of guys in that thread have been running that one for a few years now

It's not as cheap as it was a few years ago but still much better than buying one through Toyota.

Appreciate everyone's input. I am returning that OEM(?) one I bought on Ebay and going with a Spicer off of Amazon. Figuring the likelihood of this Spicer part having some dramatic failure is very slim and it will likely serve its purpose. Not a total cheapo part but less than half OEM. Been dishing out a lot of money lately. I'll let everyone know how the repair goes and if the vibrations go away.

Suggestions for getting the carrier bearing free once the stake nut and flange are off? This thing sure is stuck on there.

    Use a puller:

Edit- sorry- read too quickly. I thought you said flange...

spray some pb blaster (or your favorite choice of penetrating oil) on the bearing/race let it sit for awhile and then tap it off with a hammer or puller?

Thanks. Do you have the specific name for that type of puller?

I ended up getting the bearing off. For whatever reason it came off easy after sitting overnight. I got everything back on and it initially appears to have not solved my vibration issues. Bummer.

    Pictures just because... rust :(

Looks like my next move is checking for play I'm the U joints and probably replacing ones that have play or replacing all if I don't find any movement. Not sure what else I should look into?

uh.... your vibration is likely due to how rusted your drive shaft is... it can't be balanced any more. don't throw money at that shaft anymore. you need a new one.

Man that is crusty... Didn't realize it was rusted so much. I would agree a new DS at that point is probably the way to go.
