I'm replacing the fuel tank on my '02 truck. The fuel pump still works, but I'm wondering if I should replace it while the fuel system is in pieces.

Any advice on lifespan of tacoma fuel pumps?

The truck has 53,000 miles on it. Forgot to mention.

Mine just started acting up at 230,000. I would reuse it if it's fine but its your money. Won't hurt that's for sure

    Thanks.
Another maybe relevant detail is that I'm replacing the tank because is rusted through. Any thoughts on whether rust in the tank would cause the pump to wear out sooner? Trying to gather as many opinions as possible, it's hard to part with $500, but I don't want it to blow next week and then have to pay the labor.

These intank pumps should have a screened foot. If you get it out and there's holes in it or it's missing, time to replace.

$500? What is that for. An OEM Denso pump kit with all new clamps, clips, the little hose and an upgraded pick up filter is $80 from RockAuto.
Failure starts to get more common at around 175K and beyond. Its your call on when you want to pull that tank again.
Did it rust thru from the outside or inside?

if the tank rusted through then put a new pump from rockauto.com its the same oem denso pump from the factory without the $400 markup in price.

if the tank rusted through then it may have had fine particulates going through the pump causing excessive wear that will shorten its life and is it really worth pulling the tank again to avoid spending $80 on a new pump to go along with that new tank?

and I assume you know to put a brand new inline fuel filter on at the same time (if you have one)

Modern fuel tanks have a plastic/polymer lining blown inside them. A fuel pump won't ingest rust from a rusty tank.

Thanks everyone, I just ordered the Denso pump, should have everything done by the end of next week. I'll follow up and let you know how it goes.

Here's a summary of the repairs: replaced rusted fuel tank with Spectra TO31C (18.5 gallon) fuel tank and replaced pump with DENSO 9500103 pump and strainer set. Around $300 total for parts, both from rock auto.

I didn't replace the lower shield on the fuel tank, I may replace eventually if we do more off-roading than we do now. Suggestions about this are welcome, or get in touch if you have one that will fit my truck.

Thanks for the suggestions, you all saved me lots of $.
