So a few months back my GF drove into a wooden post by the entrance to a hiking trail. It was slow speed but, it left a nice dent on the passenger side. The entire bumper needs to be replaced. My GF is paying to fix it but she is not going through insurance. The estimate from the shop is about 1,020 with parts and labor. What are the pros and cons of possibly buying and installing an off road bumper for a similar price?

Only thing to keep in mind is the extra weight of the bumper will drop the front end 0.5-1". Other than that...

Will it seriously affect gas mileage?

I don't see any cons short of the GF thinking you're trying to pull off an upgrade thanks to her. Unless she understands the cost is the same either way that is...

I'll sell you one for $800 and I promise you'll never have to worry about a wood post, rock, car or missle ever again.

No. You'd be surprised how heavy the stock one is. With the hitch being integrated to the bumper, she's heavy.

^I think @DRAWN is talking about the front bumper.
    Nope.
The frame will crumple before the bumper does? :D

Not. It'll take less than 2 hours to remove stock and install aftermarket.

Psst, this is where you market your skid plates. :)
Most of the work will be pulling off the stock bumper shell with all the clips and brackets.

Take her out to dinner with the saved money? So you consider it OK for the OP to profit off his GF? Rather than just get a nicer bumber and call it a day. Strange!

To install it's easy. Remove stock license plate lights, trailer plug and wire harness. Remove all bolts holding bumper to chassis. Transfer lights, trailer plug and wire harness to new bumper. Bolt new bumper in same place as stock bumper. Attach license plate and check lights. Take picture, put on forum, and tell us you love it.
