they still do. depends on the dealer. i know Hyundai only gets bottom End and they transfer everything to the new block. and unless you are a getting a used unit. you most likely will get a long block which is 90% done but they still need to some engine work.

A sample of the used oil sent to Blackstone Labs for analysis would very quickly prove or disprove the dealer assessment of metal in the oil.

That would be my step one.

If the dealer dropped the pan and found metal shavings, there really is no point to pay for further diag.

I would have preferred to see with my own eyes but even a small amount of metal shaving means something is very wrong.

Best course of action if motor is really in fact toast.

    LS swap! :burnrubber:

No point in arguing semantics about Chevy vs Toyota reliability at this juncture.

Today’s engines are more reliable and efficient but when something inside goes bad, they are throwaway.

Take the truck somewhere else. Don’t mention the first diagnosis to the second. Just see what they say. If it is a bad engine cut your losses and get rid of it or do nothing and drive it until it drops. Who knows? It may have another 30k miles of life left.

Does anyone sell the 3.5's new? If the truck is in good shape it might be worth it. Taco's are expensive as hell new.

Dealer techs are not techs, they are part replacers. You bring in your truck, they plug it in and they do what the computer tells them to do without any diagnosis. Its a shame that diagnosis is gone.

You can look yourself and maybe something local will save shipping. Still need to swap and I’d change waterpump and the parts which typically need changing

Doesn't worry me. There is always the potential of failure of any vehicle. Compare the engine failure rate to a GM or FCA product!

I'd beg to differ with you on that. I'm a dealer tech, and have been for 20 years. It's not just as simple as plug up the "computer" and it tells you what to do. TechStream does not do that. You actually have to look up the diagnostic procedure on TIS and follow that.

It is insulting to read all the "stealership" comments on here. And that the dealer is just trying to take you. I personally do not know a Toyota Tech that would want to replace your engine just for fun. It's not a quick and easy pop it in job. The short cut is pull the cab. The book way is pull the trans, then the engine. No one wants their lift tied up for 2-3 day doing a 20 hour customer pay engine job.

Ok let me rephrase that, Many new techs just go by what the computer tells them. I grew up fixing cars, I went to school for it and worked in the field for awhile too, but we didnt have computers to go by when I was fixing them. I worked for a VW dealer for many years and it was a constant issue with techs just reading the computer, replacing a part and calling it good. Then the car would come back because the issue was still present.

The term "stealership" is usually because of the service adviser not knowing what they are talking about and trying to sell you on things that are not needed.

I worked for VW for 15 yrs. And their latest scan tool does walk you step by step through the daig. But I have seen my fair share who shotgun parts at an issue. Those guys usually don't last long. As for the service advisers.......90% of the ones I have worked with, were not car people and have limited knowledge of how cars work. And have a hard time understanding what the techs tell them, let alone be able to relay it to the customer.

I am a Commercial Transportation Tech. I work in a fleet shop with dealer level access for warranty etc. Having a Red Seal certificate might say you are a mechanic but it certainly doesn't make you one. I can say that diagnostics is the biggest lacking skill with most technicians now a days. It is a lost art form. If this was my engine, I would be getting a second opinion... mine specifically, but a second opinion regardless.

The other thing about this thread is that we are all going off 1 simple fact, metal in the oil and 1 recommendation, engine needs to be replaced. We definitely do not have enough information.

One a side note, my experience with a dealership, makes me see then them as stealerships. After my first service experience, I decided my truck was in better hands with me doing the service work.

He wouldn’t be screwing the dealership, he’d be screwing the next poor sap who gets stuck with it (unless the dealership includes a warranty to the next guy, but either way they’ll be buying a truck that’s gonna shit the bed on them soon). That’s no karma I’d want.
