Most states have laws on how loud car horns can be usually 100-110 db is the limit.

Tell ya what, if I ever come across a "horn volume checkpoint" with officers with calibrated DB meters, I'll eat my spare tire

I installed Fiamm El Grande 74100 dual horns into daughters’ 06 Camry and 07 Corolla. Wired them into existing wiring, which already has a relay. Horns are going on 10 years and still working great. Price has actually gone down on Amazon since I got them. $26 vs $22.

What is the specified distance from the source for the measurement?

Ship horns are extremely loud at 1 meter, but at 2 km will be very soft.

A free field for sound measurement is defined as a 3 dB drop for each doubling of distance. So, at 6 inches if the level is 112 dB then at 12 inches the sound level will reduce to 109 dB. Now, the additional 6 inches its legal. Who wouldn't want 6 more inches??

I honestly installed one of those single trumpet tankless compressor horns in place of my stock one. You really only have to run one wire, and can reuse the existing horn wiring.

Link please? I don’t think that’s true, my state and many others require the horn to be audible at a distance of 200 ft with no DB limits specified. Here’s a summary by state.

And my state says "unreasonably loud". Unreasonably doesn't sound like a measurable amount

Lol I saw several states say that including mine. Terribly written laws, “unreasonable” is in the ears of the listener would make for an interesting court case.

NY also states that it's not to be unnecessarily loud lol.

Oh its not measurable. Just like the NY horn and exhaust laws. They're written loosely so they can try screwing you over if they want. Gotta make the state money.

I did the 4 note Cadillac horn mod a few years ago and really like it. You can pick them pretty cheap on ebay. The wiring isn't difficult. I used the existing wiring harness for the power, but you'll need to add ground wires for each horn.
