Replace valve stem seals?

Getting a few puffs of smelly white smoke after cold start on a 4.0 truck. Only happens after truck sits for a couple days because it is not my daily driver. Engine was replaced recently.

When I did the leak down test on #3, I could hear air coming back out of the spark plug hole. I had it threaded and sealed. I could also hear air coming out of the plug hole for cyl #1. Nowhere else, not out of the intake, exhaust, or crankcase.

When I did the leak down on #1, I could hear air coming out of the crankcase. Of note, there was also about 1/2 qt of oil in the air intake!!

Anyone ever remove the pistons out of the top of the block without removing the engine? It actually runs pretty good. It just now started idling a little rough, but runs well other than that. I was hoping to just throw on some new cyl heads and gaskets, but it looks like the rings need replacing, too. I do not really want to remove the engine. I was just wondering how feasible it is to push the pistons out of the top and then put in new pistons and bearings.

Wow! Are you sure the compression tester was tight? I don't know how you didn't get a P303 code with no compression.

Removing the pistons w/o removing the engine, kind of difficult, you still have to be able to get to the rods and remove them from the crankshaft. That means the oil pan has to come off.
