After replacing the cam position sensor on my '97 Tacoma 2.7 and troubleshooting the ignitor codes, all codes cleared, and there was no engine light when the engine started nicely. I took the vehicle for a short drive, it had good acceleration and no hesitation, as it ran very rough before replacing the sensor.
The engine light came back on and when checked the code it had P0340 again. Cleared the code, and the engine started fine, when the engine light came back on the idle dropped some, but still runs good otherwise, still P0340. Any suggestions on what to check next?

    You are loosing cam signal.
I'd check the connector for the cam sensor and make sure it's making good contact.
Other than that, you'd need to get to the ECM and do resistance checks while wiggling wires and harnesses.

Even better would be to scope the signal. But that's not really something most DIY'er can do.

Did you use a Toyota cam position sensor?

    Thanks for your replies.
I replaced the crankshaft position sensor just in case—still P0340 code. Both new sensors are Denso.

I double-checked the cam sensor connector for the click before reinstalling the throttle body. It was a solid connection & wires appeared to be attached properly

I called the authorized Toyota folks I bought this block from about the P0340 code a couple of years ago after I had started the engine for 1st time. The mgr. said they might have mistakenly installed a distributor camshaft that would not have the cam lobe for the sensor. The cam lobe did come around when the sensor was out last week, so the correct cam was installed.
Would a scope tell where the issue is rather than just a sensor code?

It might... the scope will show the strength (amplitude) of the signal which is what I am thinking is the problem. I looked for a know good signal for comparrison but could only come up one for a 3.4. If the signal strength is the problem the question is what can you do about it, the sensor can only be pushed in so far.

The confusing thing is that the trucks starts nicely, usually when the cam position sensor is flaky there is an extended crank before it starts.
