I'm pretty close to the toyota dealer. I just stopped by and picked one of those up. The receipt is my proof of an oil change.

Mods? What's a mod? Bone stock, baby. Well, okay. Maybe a few smallish mods. If you count a locking gas cap, coin holder and a behind-the-seat trash bag.
But what if someone wants to steal my oil?!

Just kidding. :) I couldn't resist. It seems as if theft of petroleum products is a recurring theme.

The washer helps keep oil from leaking out. For example, my 98 Corolla ALWAYS had an oil residue on the bottom of the pan around the plug. I put a plastic washer on the plug a few changes back, and it's been dry every change since! So now I have them on the car and the truck.

My filter is ALWAYs a bitch to get off! Not as back as the first one, but it's tough each change. I oil the gasket, put it on hand tight, etc, but each time it takes a wrench to get it off. Like the engine vibes torque that sucker down or something. Needless to say I need to find a better filter wrench.

^Thanks for reminding me. I haven't had to change my oil since January but I'm doing it tomorrow and I need to get a filter wrench ASAP.

I got the the oil change valve from fumoto today. I think it will work great. I just changed my oil with royal purple last weekend so I will have to wait to put this in.

The four cylinder oil filter is pretty hard to get to. On my dads 07 V6 its so easy to get to, but on my 05 I4, its underneath everything.

Ok now this washer you guys are talking about is this something new since the 2005 Model Tacoma?
On my 2005 I changed oil every 5,000 miles and never changed the washer and never had a oil leak.... as a matter of fact I have been changing oil in my own vehicles for about 25 years and I have never had to replace any kind of washer on any drain plug on any vehicle I have owned.
The washer on my 2005 was just a fiber washer that went between the drain plug and the oil pan and there would be no need to replace it unless you lost it or it tore while taking it off.
I have a oil change coming up on my 2008 Tacoma so I need to get this figured out quick..........does anyone have any pics.

Exactly, there is no room to stick a wrench in there to try to get the filter off.

The fiber washer your speaking of is what we are all talking about. I replace mine every other oil change. Most all cars have some kind of sealing washer on the oil drain plug. Some are crush washers that are one time use, some are fiberous like ours. Toyota still recomends you replace it every time. I worked in a Mazda dealership a few years back and we got cars towed in all the time for failing drain plug washers. Over time with heat cycles, the fiberous ones get brittle and will sometimes crack. This leaves 4-5 quarts of oil all over your driveway/garage floor. Cheap insurance if you ask me???

I just changed my oil today for the first time. I’ve got the 4x4 Tacoma with an I4. First, I went to Toyota and bought one of those oil filter wrenches that fit on the end of the filter like a cap and uses a 3/8 in drive. While lying on a crawler under the passenger side of the truck and using a 6 inch extetion and both hands, I was able to get the filter off easily. The washer for the drain plug looks like it will last multiple oil changes with no problem. However I got a few extras as spares. This whole process was much easier than I thought it would be.

Got a part number or name for the black filter wrench? I need to get me one.... lol And is that just 1 size? I need to get something for my car too. That one's a pain in the ass, under the engine one.

That’s the setup I was talking about in my previous post. It makes getting the filter off quick and easy.

Mine looks similar but is specific to the Tacoma size filter. With tax I paid $6.42. It's made of steel and should last longer that the truck.
