Just replaced the VVT Solenoid on the driver's side: 06 Tacoma, 1GR engine. I thought after replacing the VVT that would once and for all fix the problem. After 7 days the code returned. What now? Should I replace the VVT on the passenger side? When I purchased the part from a Toyato Dealership, I was told that replacing both was not necessary. Only replace the bad one. At $172 a copy, I took their advice. Any ideas at this point. Should I pull the cam sensors and clean if they are dirty? Replace the VVT on the passenger side even though I'm not getting the code for that side. A timing job? That would be really expensive. Just keep clearing the code and see what happens? I'm really at a loss here.

There’s also a vvt filter you should replace when doing a VVT.
At a minimum it should be checked and cleaned.
Did you do that when you replaced the VVT?

How many miles on the truck and what's the maintenance history?
Do you get a loud rattle/knock on startup until oil pressure comes up?

May be time for timing chains but you can take the inspection cover off by the chain tensioner to see how far extended it is.
