I have a ’98 SR5 4WD. Was doing the front brakes and noticed that the inner rubber dust covers for the front axles are both starting to rot through on the outer end (the end that clamps to the axle). There is only minor leaking of grease so far, and both axles are still nice and tight at that CV joint, so I’d like to fix this problem before it gets worse. Anyone done this before? I know how to get the axles out, but I don’t see how you can get a fresh rubber boot on it once you do. I saw once a picture of a replacement boot that had a ‘seam’ in it – so you opened the seam, wrapped it around the axle and somehow put that seam back together. Anyway, if anyone has done this I’d sure appreciate some guidance. I know I could just buy new axles, but don’t want to if I don’t have to.
