So the 4runner reservoir goes into the same place, or in the engine bay?

Going to a u-pull-it thats local tomorrow. Dude specializes in Toyotas, and has dozens of tacomas and 4runners. Even saw a t-100 and a couple of those older toyota trucks with the camper/extended cab thing. Going to poke around and see what I can cook up.

If it makes you guys feel any better; my 1999 Tacoma fill neck cracked a couple years ago, so the original lasted many years. I bought a brand new tank, and it too cracked but after less than 2 years. The only thing I can think of is the original cracked not too long after I started using the pre-mixed Rain-X washer fluid. I continued using it with the new tank. So I'm wondering if this stuff isn't compatible with the filler neck somehow. But in any event, a new tank is not the answer because it will crack quickly too.

yes if you get one from around the 96 to 98 or maybe even a 2000 it will bolt up. Basically one from the same body style as far as front end goes will bolt up.

I have a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 TRD and just got it back from the body shop. They had to replace my windshield fluid reservoir...

    Question:

The reservoir sits in the wheel well behind the front bumper; is it supposed to be exposed in the wheel well or is there supposed to be a protective cover?

This is how it looks now, I cannot seem to remember if it had a cover or not but common sense tells me that it should since it is designed for off road use....

    Thanks!

It seems some have it and some don't. It's not clear if it was part of an option package or trim level. They pretty much go the way of the Dodo when 33's or larger go on.
FWIW, the manufacturer of the original factory tanks changed at some point and with good reason. Delphi was the original OEM supplier, looks like you have the newer one.
Additionally there are 2 different tanks, "standard" and "cold weather". The standard tank does not have a cover. Below is the cover for the cold weather tank.

yes, you should have had one and you do need one, they forgot to put the cover back on it, many with big tires damage theirs so they leave them off but it should be covered to prevent rock damage as well as bad electrical connections an hose issues.

Yea, they have a cover. I yanked mine off my 1st gen at one point. Never put it back on either. It was fine without, but better safe then sorry. I eventually switched to a reservoir that I mounted above the wheel well under the hood. Fit perfect, and no more rotted neck.

I'm sure it will be fine without the cover, although there is probably a reason Toyota put one there in the first place... BUT... with the cost of the repairs... I paid for it and the body shop needs to replace it.

I repaired my tank today using bondo cloth (mat) and resin. Just as a note - The Permatex tank repair kit mentioned in post #6 only includes one 5"X2" strip of fiberglass repair cloth. If your tank is anything like mine or the others shown in this thread, it won't be nearly enough. It's about $21 total at Home Depot for the materials to do a sizable repair - $6 for the bondo cloth and $15 for the resin. Bondo also makes a $16 Fiberglass Resin 6-piece repair kit that looks like it contains enough cloth to get the job done. HD didn't carry the kit though.

Can anyone else confirm the 4runner tank fits the tacoma? Anyone have a pic of one installed or a side by side? I need to get a new reservoir or modify mine to take the 4runner top piece if it's possible.

I have 33's and my cover is still in place, can't say that for anything bigger than a 33" though.

OP, have the repair shop put the cover where it belongs.

    Good luck.

I just fill it up to the base of the neck right before the leak on my 04 I have now. It still holds quite a bit. I bought & replaced a resevior on my 99 Tacoma when I was 16 and didn't really think of just repairing the one I had so needless to say it was an expensive replacement! Since I bought it from the dealership. Dumb, Dumb and Dumber!

I actually replaced mine with a custom PVC one. So I have the OEM reservoir just sitting around if somebody wants it. Would come with just the reservoir and black plastic wheel well cover. No pump or bolts.

I'm in the same boat with a cracked neck, the Camry bottle looks similar and I wonder if there the same?

Yes 4runner from about the same year will bolt up. However it has a smaller capacity and the one I got did not have a low fluid sensor. I plan on fiberglassing mine at some point.

Is the replaceable neck on the 4 runner tank the same shape as the Tacoma? In other words if I bought the 4 runner neck, would I be able to graft it on to my Tacoma tank?
