Yep it’s not OEM. If it was, it’ll say toyota in the corner.

It’s either not sized correctly or a bad install job.

    Who did the work? Safelite?

Pilkington is definitely the OEM for the original glass. All the glass on my '17 says Pilkington on it.

That doesn't mean it's not the wrong part or that it wasn't made wrong, though..

Pilkington has made the windshield glass for the Tacoma since 1995. They're the OE manufacturer, just like the carrier bearing is made by Spicer and the rear differential is made by Hino. OE doesn't always mean it will be the same quality though, Sankei 555 make the lower ball joints for first gens, and they're inferior in quality to the OEM Toyota lower ball joints even though they're made in the same place.

I'd say you just got unlucky with that windshield. They're not always perfect.

I have a large crack in mine as well, I’ve been driving around with it for awhile. Afraid to get it replaced been hearing bad things about it with the 2018s and up.

No the windshields are interchangeable between both gens. There’s a thread on TW and guy put gen 3 windshield on his gen 2

Not sure if people realize OEM is an Original Equipment Manufacturer. That company that makes the exploding airbags is an OEM for most autobibile companies. They make the same part and stamp it with a different logo for whatever company decided to throw shrapnel into its customer. So when you say it’s not OEM cause it doesn’t have a Toyota logo on it . . .

That's the important distinction between OE and OEM. Original Equipment (OE) will have the Toyota logo on it and be made to Toyota's spec, while an OEM part will be a part made by the same company, but was not supplied to Toyota.

An OEM windshield/rotor/light/etc will be made by the same company as the OE (usually, though sometimes there are multiple OEMs for a part), but is not NECESSARILY the same part from the same production machines/tolerances/materials.

I’ve heard they leak or the same problem this guy has had where the seal isn’t the same. My dealership have said people have been coming in because the sensors are all off after the replacement is put in

If it's made by Pilkington, it will fit. I had mine replaced last year and request OE glass. No issue with fitment or leaks.

For what it’s worth my aftermarket windshield fits just fine. Only difference I have noticed is of course it’s not branded pilkington and the GoPro mount isn’t branded with the GoPro logo. A local shop to me does top notch work and it fits like a glove. Can’t beat $50 IMO.

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
Hmmm... was just cleaning the windshield on the Avalon and noticed the MFR is AGC Automotive . I will say, it has taken a few good shrapnel hits and just a small pit, I think the same would have destroyed the Tacoma windshield. The Avalon windshield seems much more stout.

I think the angle of the windshield has something to do with it too. Cars have more of an angle to it where the Tacoma is fairly upright, less glancing blows and more square hits = more cracked windshields. Just my opinion though, no facts to back it up lol.

    Totally this ^^^^

Drove my FJ for four years without an issue in rural Texas. As soon as I got to urban Texas with highway commuting I averaged 1-2 chips a year and replaced the glass twice for cracks over 12”. Darn near vertical windshield.

Auto manufacturers these days are also making them thinner for weight reduction.

Just wanted to give folks an update. Glass guy came out yesterday and we measured the replacement. It was also pilkington and he said that Toyota only uses Pilkington. They just etch Toyota on it instead of Pilkington. The replacement measured the same as the first replacement. After an hour he calls me and says it's in and no issues. So the other tech must have had an issue laying it correctly. He did say the tolerances were tight and likely designed that way.

I then noticed that my side window is etched pilkington also. factory original glass.
