Well you must have worked in a not so good body shop. It don't take much these days in the era of HSS to render a frame not repairable. The most common way that Tacoma trucks are totaled out or require a frame replacement is a rear impact if hard enough bends a kink into the frame rails via leverage with the bumper brackets. The crappy part is the kink is so small, a few inches into the rail, and sometimes there's no real sheet metal damage if any.

That was back in 1965, in Yuma, AZ and this particular body shop was considered one of (if not) the best body shop in town (but that's not saying much). However, I'm fully aware that all body shops are not equal. What really concerns me is that in a serious crash, most vehicles are simply NOT restored to a like-new condition, even though they may look OK superficially. Plus, a serious crash results in a "Salvage Title" here in Colorado. Those vehicles are worth much less, and are hard to sell.
