So I have 150,000 miles on my 2005 Tacoma. Noticed that going into third gear grinds quite a bit talked to my mechanic about it, and he said that the synchro is bad on it and it needs to get replaced.
question is: is replacing a manual transmission and clutch doable. with some mechanical know how and the gumption to do it?

I replaced the throw out bearing in my 2011 Tacoma in an afternoon. Had a buddy help me. Just need a floor jack and a basic tool set. And maybe a case of beer

I too replaced the throw out bearing on my 2005 Tacoma. The bearing went bad and I had to replace the new throw out with another new throw out. The odds of that happening are almost nill. Pulling the tranny with a buddy wasn't too bad. Definitely need two guys to handle removing and reinstalling. Pretty simple job though!

It more than likely is just a worn syncro as your mechanic said. I think you misunderstood him however. The Syncro can be replaced without replacing the entire transmission.

Just have a transmission shop replace the syncros.

You do not need a new transmission.

Depending on cost and whether or not if you plan to keep the truck for awhile, it might be better to find a wrecked truck with low miles with the the same tranny and replace it.

It is for a transmission repair shop. And probably cheaper too.

There is a thread on XRU where a guy rebuilt his, due to bad syncros. Should I look for it?

Rent/borrow a transmission jack. Do the R/R yourself, and DIY the clutch. Have a good transmission shop perform the rebuild. You'll save $$.

Rebuilding a manual transmission is actually pretty easy but requires more specialized tools than the average home shop is equipped with - pullers, hydraulic press, micrometers, etc. Better to just farm out the rebuild and save on the removal/install.

It really comes down to how confident you are in your abilities. If this is your first go at doing something mechanical you shouldn't try it unless you have someone with experience helping you.

I understand, yeah I could have up to a week at the beginning of January, but I may just wait till I save up money before having it serviced.

Do you really need 3rd gear? You have 5 other gears that work plus reverse. Our transmissions have twice the amount of forward gears as the older vehicles so you can lose 2 more before you have to start to worry.

I want 3rd gear, I get kind of obsessive about stuff like this.. talked to my old high school auto shop teacher lol he thinks I could do the install. Anyways I'm gonna see how much synchro replacements cost At a transmission shop in Oakland n see what they charge. He suggested doing the clutch, master cylinder, rear main seal, resurfaced flywheel or new flywheel as well
