I've got a '13 tacoma dbl cab ong bed and have recently put a pop up camper on it. Had to remove taligate and thus the back up camera. My question and dilemna: I want to put a camera back on and want to know if anyone has done this? Is it possible to take the camera out of the tailgate and use it on the license plate holder? Car Toys said they can put one of their products in and splice into the existing wiring allowing it to use the rearview mirror.

    Thoughts?

Remove the tailgate cover and take out the tailgate camera harness and camera. Place it where you like.

That seems relatively simple. I will give it a try

The diagrams were great! I have it out of the tailgate and am now figuring out where to put it. There is a rectangle hole directly centered over the license plate that the camera fits through. Now I just need to figure out how to permanently attach it and keep it there (but be able to disassemble when the camper is off and I want the tailgate back on). Any suggestions? Also, having never really done this before-do I need to consider where the camera is as far as accuracy of the lines in the picture on the rearview mirror?

I'd say buy another camera harness (82182-04012) and reattach it to the tailgate. Also, if you like, find the same height as in the tailgate for your camper, place camera there. Before camper is removed, remove connector from the underside of Tacoma and camera.

IMO you should get a different camera since the one thats in your tailgate cost like $700 lol. You can get one that works as a direct swap for like $20 on Amazon.

I mounted mine in that same spot above the license plate. Used a piece of square aluminum tube and ground out the inside enough to friction fit the camera. then used a couple L brackets to rivet it in place. Allows me to move the camera back to the tailgate if I ever need to.

Isn't that hole centered above the license plate the access to the spare tire winch? Don't think you want to cover that up. You could fabricate a mounting bracket from aluminum bar stock that would mount with the license plate screws. Mount the camera with its mount from the tailgate to the aluminum bar.
