Has anyone tried connecting an aftermarket backup camera to the factory head unit?

I want to replace the factory tailgate camera with an aftermarket unit that is attached to the license plate, but I don't want to replace the stereo.

When I have my bikerack installed, it blocks the camera, so I want to lower it to a spot where I can see what's on the other side of the bikes.

Additionally, I plan to buy a slide in camper, which means removing the tailgate (and the camera).

gotcha. My guess is the camera is just a typical A/V plug in, but you would have to remove the radio entirely to find out

The camera disconnects from the truck at the tailgate plug when you remove the tailgate. you need to source a matching plug and build your new harness from there. I don't see any need to go back to the head unit.

And they never saw who they were backing over. I'll take the backup cams and save lives. Great concept. The cams are there for the little ones you can't see Smit !!!!!

If the shell you want to get doesnt have the option for a backup camera, A.R.E. has a shell called the "DCU Series" which they offer a backup camera that utilizes the trucks screen (plug and play). Its a third brake light with a camera in it. If you cant find another way, could find an ARE distributor and get the camera and install it yourself and then when you get the shell, you can attach it and wire up the 3rd brake light.

    New DCU Rear View Camera.jpg

We use these on the F150s at our office for our customers, havent done one on a Tacoma but their website shows they are available on the build for a 16 tacoma. Just need to call up a ARE shop and tell them you just want the plug n play camera that utilizes the trucks screen. They are about $250 for the F150 so cant imagine they would be much more.

I'm curious about this also. I want to add a swing out tire carrier and bumper in the back and don't want to loose the use of the camera.

This^. Backup cameras, parking sensors, BSM, etc. are great but before them I (along with a lot of others) never got into an accident without them. They're there as an enhancement to the skills already acquired, which sadly a lot of younger drivers aren't learning because this tech is what they are starting out with.

They make a very good rear bumper. The only thing I dont like about it personally is the need to cut into the rear fenders. Wish they had a slimmer side that was just straight bolt on.

I've heard of this Situational Awareness thing where you don't listen to music and surf the web on your phone while you're driving. Radical.

Got one better than that. Me and the wife were in her 2016 Rav-4 the other day and I was driving. As we were backing out of a parking stall I apparently failed to use one of those fricken shiny things and the camera screen and backed right into a F'n pole thingy. $ 690.00 later it's all better now.
