Can anyone tell me if I am able to replace the broken oring in the picture without taking the caliper apart? Has anyone ordered just the oring instead of the caliper repair kit and if so where did you order from? Toyota only sells the kit, but I don't to buy if I don't have to.. thanksIMG-1988659958.jpg

Replacing those little seals is kind of a thing of the past. But if you were to do it the piston would have to be pushed completely out. This is done by getting an air gun and putting compressed air in the line hole. Getting a new caliper would be easier to do labor wise.

Just replace it with a reman or a junk yard part. Mstrecycling.com or rockauto.com

It can be done w/o removing piston. Brake grease that's safe for rubber is your friend. You can get caliper rebuild kits aftermarket for about $15. Please note that there are two different types of calipers, one which that boot/outter seal is held in place with a wire ring and the other type does not use the wire ring at all, but is held on with a lip that is machined into the caliper. Be sure to purchase the correct kit for your type of caliper, they are different.

That is only a dust shield, the oring is inside.

From the pic it looks like you have some corrosion on the piston, replacing the dust shield without replacing the other parts is going to ultimately result in a sticking piston if you don't have one already.

Buy the rebuild kit from Toyota and a piston, or buy a reman caliper. The rebuild kit has parts to do both sides FYI.

What he said. It's just a dust/ contaminant shield. There's an actual seal that sits in a groove inside he caliper body that the piston slides and seals against. With the rust or corrosion on the piston body, you'll damage the seal, better to rebuild or replace.

Why do anything? Clip may be missing a bit but it is still doing its function. Corrosion appears to be outside of hydraulic system and is not hurting anything.

What you are asking about is a caliper rebuild. If that seal broke, then its likely that the piston is certainly corroded on its sides. The seal kit is cheap, like $10ish from a rock auto. To do it right, you may as well pull the other pistons, remove the corrosion from their sidewalls, then replace all the seals. Its a bit labor intensive for what your trying to achieve, will probably take a few hours to do, and requires you to have the tools to clean them.

So either do all that, or just buy a rebuilt oem caliper for $65

You don't understand how the caliper works, the OD of the piston slides against an o-ring, the corrosion is on the sealing surface of the piston.

If you're at the point where one seal/dust guard is broken then you need to replace them all. Buy a rebulit caliper. Rebuilding 4 piston calipers is a pain, just not worth it. Try holding 3 pistons in to get the 4th stuck one out, it's not fun. Just buy a rebuilt.

FML, thanks for the responses...i never thought replacing the oring would be so much labor...if I buy a rebuilt caliper do I have to buy one for the passenger side too?

Depends on how many miles are on it. I would, but I'm crazy about preventive maintenance.
