Hi, A friend of mine just purchased a used 2003 Tacoma DCSB. He wants to change the ignition cylinder with a new one and I am going to help him do this. I am looking to see if anyone has done this to their 1st gen Taco or if someone has some instructions on how to do this. Even a page from the factory service manual would help. Thanks!

The ign switch assembly is held on by 2 screws that the heads twist off. So they have to be drilled out. If you need to replace the complete assembly. If your replacing just the tumbler see the attached file.

if it was me I would get the new cylinder rekeyed to the original key... multiple keys and multiple sets of keys is a real pain in the rear. The other thing I would do is not twitst the security bolts to the point where the heads twist off... it makes taking the lock bolt cylinder easier to take off next time.

actually, I would rather re-key the door lock cylinders to match the new ignition cylinder. Has anyone done that? Is that difficult to do?

need to go to a locksmith ... toyota uses what is called a split wafer for anti theft purposes and there are so many different wafers needed that it isnt economical for us at our level of repair to do.

ok. Thanks for the info. My friend will use his keyfob most of the time so he wasnt too concerned that the door keys didnt match the ignition, just wanted new keys.

If that is the case why not just rebuild all the lock cylinders instead of buying new .

I guess he could have done that but he wanted an easy solution so he decided to just replace all the cylinders. At least the doors match.
