I got a knock sensor code and apparently they need replacing. My mechanic says that the Toyota repair guide tells him to take off the intake manifold and cylinder head, which should be done by removing the engine. He's done knock sensors on other Toyotas and has never needed to do all that. Is it necessary, or can he get them out without such an extensive amount of labor?

    Thanks!

There are two coolant pipes that cross over between the water pump and rear cross over. They get in the way of the knock sensors for replacement.

I can do it without removing the pipes or heads. I loosen off the 2 water pipes and manuever them to get in my crafty tools in. You have to remove the upper water inlet as well.

Some guys cut the left pipe bracket to get more movement out.

It's an asshole to do, you should also consider replacing the small pigtail harness to the sensors to eliminate any possibility of it being the issue.

Mice like to live in that valley, so make sure to check for a nest.

On re-installation its crucial to install the sensors at the angle specified by the repair manual along with the correct torque.
