I know a lot of folks don't care about these things and even remove them permanently but for those folks living in the rust belt, here is a way to easily replace those rotted dust shields without taking your hubs apart.

    The originals:

New dust shields cut in half using a sabre saw with a metal cutting blade. I primed and painted the shield 1/2's after cutting.

I was wondering how this would work, my shields are shot, but as you say, not worth pulling the hubs to replace.

What did the new shields cost?

    Nice job!

They were part of a bigger order from Village Toyota in FL so not sure what shipping would add but the shields themselves were around $20.00 each if I recall correctly.

    Thanks!

This just became a "must do" because of "simple engineering"..

Thank you, great idea and write up...

My old ones were "adjusted" by an oops my son had with jack stands.....

    I can now "correct that"...

Very Nice!! Got one side pretty bent (mostly bent back) from a jack with a hydraulic leak...

Good idea! Maybe figure out an easy and secure way to join the outer cut ends to keep the assy. rigid. I wish there was an easy fix like this for the rear backing plates. Mine are pretty bad.

The saw blade kerf ensures about a 1/16 inch space between the two halves and the thicker metal that the bolts pass through provides sufficient rigidity to each half; there is no rattle or vibration that I have noticed.

I was thinking the same thing but that is a structural piece for the the drum brake assembly.

you can still buy new ones from Toyota, I bought Tundra ones when I upgraded my brakes (they will scrape the normal Tacoma ones due to size increase)

This is a good idea. Mine keep rubbing. Was about to cut them off today (since I don't want to mess with my hubs).
Got a part number(s) to share?

Some stuff is actually quite reasonably priced. Those are on the list of not at all
Granted it's a buy once and that's it vs a part that has a life.
