Wife and kids are going to be gone for a week, so I'm looking to bang out some maintenance while I have the time.

2007 Taco, 167k miles. Steering components (tie rods, rack and pinion) are all original. I've just noticed the passenger side inner tie rod boot is leaking, so figured I'd replace it. I've slowly developed a clunk sounds when hitting bumps, and have noticed my tires squeal when taking sharp turns. I assume this is from slop in the system.

I've gotten under the truck and grabbed hold of the tie rods and can't seem to find any play anywhere. I can't rotate them or translate them. Last night, I had my son move the steering wheel back and forth with the vehicle turned off, which produced a small clunking sound. It appeared to me the steering rack was moving 1/8-3/16" each time he moved the wheel left/right. I'm not certain what's normal... is that a sign of a bad rack or just bad bushings, or perfectly normal?

So in my case, I can't find an obvious issue with any tie rods, and not sure what's normal for rack movement. I hear a clunk and seem to have some steering "looseness" symptoms. I hate replacing components that aren't bad, but any change in this region is going to result in the cost of alignment anyways, so considering just replacing everything given the mileage and cost is not very high. If I do this, I'm going to put new LCAs on, as well, since all of the alignment bushings are seized.

What's the general concensus on expected life of these components? Am I wrong to just replace everything while I have it all apart? Any suggestions on how to diagnose it further?
