I just bought a 2019 Tacoma SR with the steel wheels. I bought a set of 2018 TRD off-road rims to put on it. Will the tpms sensors work or do I have to buy new ones?

The steel wheel tpms is a different degree sensor than the off-road sensor. 40?, vs 20 degree's if I remember right. Some have installed steel wheel sensors 180 degree's from normal and they have worked. But tire installer has to be careful with installation of tires, so sensor doesn't get broke.

Are there aftermarket tpms sensors that are good or do I need to buy the ones from Toyota?

You need OEM! Don't cheat on this!
And don't forget you need new lug nuts! Not a simple process. Ask me how I know.

I plan to get new TPMS sensors when I get new tires. Can the OEM TPMS be programmed by most independent tire shops or does that need to be done at Toyota to get the center cluster to show all 4 PSI readings?

I just talked to Discount Tire today because I’m doing new tires next week. They said they can do them so we’ll see. They haven’t been able to before this. I’m replacing my steel sensors with the alloy sensors so everything is correct. I had to have Toyota do mine twice to get the corner read outs.

You can search my previous posts on TPMS to get the story. Going with Bridgestone Dueler Revo 3 in 265/65/17.

I got mine from America’s tire company (the same as discount tire) and they have been fine going on 1 1/2 years. They were cheaper than Toyota and a lot easier to work with.

Just go to google Type in the info, for example I entered " 2007 Toyota Tacoma TPMS" and got this for my truck.

My 07 Tacoma sensors are still working, but I've bought sensors from Amazon for other vehicles. They are much cheaper than going through a dealer. Most tire stores will install them free if you're buying tires. They charged me $10/tire to install them after

I have run the rims w/o sensors. Turning them 180° sounds good at first but some shops will struggle with that request and if you get a flat its done.
