Was just trying to see my options. I was completely fine paying the $580, but it helps seeing that there may be another way to deal with the problem. $580 is outrageous though for a small scratch smaller then a quarter.

I would tell them to go pound sand. You are in that vehicle because they elected to have you in that vehicle when they confiscated yours¹; it was not something you asked for. Small claims court is easy, and in most you v. a business cases biased toward the plaintiff. Or talk to a lawyer (most will do an initial consultation for free) and see what they have to say. I would not pay them a dime...

¹ - Something I will contend is illegal until the day I die--no non-governmental entity has any right or authority to seize private property.

It would be more accurate to say:

You took someone's car because you needed to fix something that might be dangerous. You told them you can't give it back until it's fixed. You don't have a clue when the parts are coming in.

So you offer them one of your many cars..that you loan out often. These cars serve this purpose and this purpose alone.

You keep their brand new car for over two months. It's outside in the rain and sun. It's left sitting.

Then that person comes back after you fix their truck. They have a dime size door ding on the door. You probably won't fix it. It's not worth it and the next person you lend the car to won't care.

Would you get mad if they scoffed at a $580 bill you sent them?

Yes we do. I come from a world where if I borrowed something for any reason, I will return in the same or better condition in which I received it.
I have never needed to get a lawyer involved in anything or take anyone to small claims court. I have served in the U.S. Air Force and my parents raised me right. Thank you very much.

Make sure and ask your buddy what happens when you don't pay them, and they just stop dealing with you, take care of themselves and then send you to collections over it.

And as far as outrageous...did they give you a written estimate for the damages?
I'll gladly look over it for you...I can guarantee that they gave you a deal

What if you returned something with trivial damage, then the lender comes back saying he needs to fix it and it's $1k. You know a fix is $100.

What would you do? I agree you should make it right. How would you make this situation right?

Not sure who made you so angry, but I was just saying that I was gonna go talk to a buddy. I never stated I wasn't going to pay for the damages. I simply saw a post that was similar to my problem and trying to see what else could be done. If I could get it to where I can pay for another place to fix it and save a couple dollars then great. If not then I just have to take the loss and pay the bill.

Here is the problem with this situation.
When the vehicle was returned it should have been inspected. Upon inspection the damage should have been noted and a fix should have been agreed upon before the borrower left the lot.
Now, does the borrower know the damage happened in his/her possession? If so, then the borrower should be allowed to take the vehicle and get repaired at his/her expense in a suitable manner.

I agree, but that didn't happen*. Now we are here. How would you make it right?

I think it's entirely reasonable, moral, and ethical to request to take it somewhere to make it right.

*You might be able to make an argument that, because this didn't happen, they accepted the damage as trivial.

Most insurance deductibles for windshields are like $50, if not just have it repaired out of pocket. A good glass guy could make that thing 95% invisible.

You called them a stealership..you insinuated that they were trying to overcharge you for something you have no idea how it should correctly be fixed, or what the actual cost should be.

As a Toyota certified collision repair professional at a Toyota "stealership" yeah I'm offended.
You are the worst kind of customer.

A nice calm conversation with whomever gave the estimate and ask if at all possible, could the borrower take the vehicle and have it repaired at his expense. If they say that is not allowed, then the borrower can pay whatever they are asking for the repair and chalk it up to a life lesson. The damage should have been taken care of before returning the vehicle, and I am sure somewhere in the paperwork that was signed before taking the car it states something about damages and repairs.

No one hurt my feelings, it just blows my mind when people start talking about court or lawyers over something so minor.
You do realize that the dealership/Toyota has a large team of lawyers that your local lawyer buddy could never stand up to.
I work at a boat repair service center and it doesnt happen very often, but occassionaly we will get a disgruntled customer that says they will get their lawyer involved. At that point we say, yes sir, you have that right.
Guess what, out of the times I have heard a customer say this, within a month they are returning to pay in full for the repairs we made and pick up their boat. So go ahead, talk to a lawyer.

My deductible for glass is only $100 bucks. Had 4 pieces replaced in my 4Runner. Only cost me $100 dollars. New windshield side and rear window. Call your ins.

I don't understand why anyone would think that damage that was incurred while you had possession of the vehicle wouldn't be your responsibility.

I mean cmon dude, nobody wants to pay for shit like that but if the rock hit the windshield while you were driving your truck you would be responsible right?
