I recently purchased 2018 Tacoma at insurance auction, theft recovery with replacement VIN tag. When doing diagnostics, I discovered that the VIN in the ECU doesn't match the replacement VIN tag. The ECU appears to have been reprogrammed to have VIN of 2016 Tacoma, same color, to mask the identity of the stolen vehicle.

Questions about reprogramming the ECU back to the original VIN?
    • Does having the wrong and older VIN in the ECU alter the ECU operation, which would motivate me to get it reprogrammed?
    • I have a working chip key and remote fob that is 'programmed' to the ECU today. I'm confused as to the order and need to program the ECU and the keys, and who can do that for me (self-program, dealer or locksmith)?
    Welcome your suggestions. Thanks

I just modified the Title and description to better describe the situation. Thanks!
