I kind of fell off this forum a while back after finishing my truck and getting busy making a family. With that being said, some winner rear ended me and after two months of back / forth with insurance, they finally totaled my vehicle. An important note, my frame was replaced three years ago from another genius rear ending me in a completely separate accident. Obviously the the truck is cursed ... but the really interesting part, I paid 30K for my taco in 12/09 and they gave me $34.5k, w/60k miles. This makes zero sense to me. With that being said, I'm going to purchase a fully loaded 2015 sport and pay cash. I'm also considering a super charger.

The resale on these trucks is insane. Interested to see what happens with the G3's stepping into things. Either way, I hope your scotch tastes as good as mine right now. Have a nice night ...

Side note, I also got my team trail wheels off the truck and swapped them with the orginals, which will be going right back on my new Taco ...

1st gen Double cabs hold their value really well too, at least in the Pacific NW. It's rare to see a straight one under 15k. Not too bad considering the newest of them is 11 years old now.

The Toyota Tacoma has the highest resale value out of any vehicle sold in the United States, followed closely by the Jeep Wrangler. Google it and see. I bought mine new because it was near the same price as buying one a few years old, which makes no sense at all.

It's comforting to know that the resale value of these trucks defies logic.

Last time we bought new was 15 years ago. Usually I pick up something that's a couple years old to avoid the depreciation hit. I discovered, however, that I could buy a new Tacoma via the Costco auto buying program for less money than I'd spend on a truck that was a couple years old.

At the end of the day, our trucks do have great resale.

But I think the original poster is confusing resale with an insurance claim. You will always get more when a truck is totaled vs if you were to sell that exact truck on the open market if it had not been totaled.

Insurance will give you blue book, private sale you will a few grand close to it, but stealerships will always be below both.

I recently had my 2013 access cab Prerunner TRD at the dealers for service. While waiting I walked around the Dealers lot looking at new and used Prerunner's. Found three 2013 AC Prerunner's, all 3 were priced higher than the window sticker price on mine when it was new. One had 50,000, and one did have an upgraded radio, mine has the basic radio.

I was really surprised to see the dealer was actually asking more money for two year old used Tacoma's than they cost new.

    Yep.

I found what helps with battling the dealer on trade value is a Car Max quote. They evaluate the vehicle and come back in about 30-45 mins. with a written price they'll pay.
I've yet to see any dealer in my area beat a Car Max offer. It may be the other way around where you live.

I don't understand how a 2-4yr old truck is valued more than new. Who are the idiots buying used tacos/driving up resale value? Maybe it's a regional thing, but I live in Metro Detroit (land of the "Big 3"), very few people own tacos in my area. Hell, most dealers don't stock them.

It might be a regional thing. There are a shit ton of tacos in California, pun intended! In the end, who cares? I paid cash for my 2015 sport last night and now my only problems are removing the stock look and figuring what to do with that horrendous front end / grille.

Do you have pics from the accident? We're morbid people, and quite frankly I'm curious what kind of rear-end damage is needed to total out a truck.

    Here is one:

Doesn't look that bad but let me clue you in. Bed cracked through, diagonally, with a huge hole in the corner. Rear axel destroyed. Differential problems. Exhaust system destroyed. Cab damage from bed. The kicker, frame damage to mounting brackets for the bed and axel - unrepairable.

Thanks for sharing, bummer to hear about the accident but luckily it sounds like you got a new truck out of it.

Yeah, all and all it was good. Just thankful the family wasn't with me because I was hurting until just recently. Guy was going 60+Mph when he hit me and I was stopped ...
