Important thing is he is alright, but it probably isn't an engine failure. I've seen a lot of tacos roll on its side and drive away. I would be willing to bet the power to the fuel pump is out.

Yeah, I still cant imagine how he rolled it in that spot.
Good cable rigging job to get it righted though!

There are a lot of possibilities we could speculate about, but one thing to consider is that the truck was probably on its side for quite a while before he was able to get it back on its wheels by himself - its very possible that the cylinders filled with oil.

All in all, I'm glad there was a happy ending. I would be curious to hear his account of the whole story, and his thought process in the decisions he made if he minds sharing them. Like many have said, leaving the vehicle probably wasn't the best idea, but he seems capable to handle himself outdoors and he ended up with the rescue team in the end somehow. Albeit a costly accident, it seems like everyone can learn something from this to better prepare themselves for future off road trips.

For those of you who are following this:

Member and best friend of mine, BeeRadd and myself will be taking my shop's flatbed along with a friend's Dodge 2500 up to Ridgecrest with some more towing equipment to get him up on the trailer, strapped in, and back down to OC.

Will post updates when we have him and the truck in our possession :D

It just moved up to the top of my list!

On a side not, I'm pretty sure I saw this guy in Afton Canyon in January, sweet rig! It's a shame what happened, but glad it seems to be turning out ok, hes alive and the truck is on 4 wheels...
 to the guys that went out, and the others that are headed out with the flat bed. I've been there and know how much it sucks waiting for a friend to arrive with a flat bed, I cant imagine waiting over night with my truck on its side!

Damn, you so-cal guys rock!! I'm glad everything worked out! I do agree with the other SAR guys about staying with the rig but I also think it's situational. It kinda depends on your abilities, anyhow, great news!
