Ok cool, yeah I just downloaded the trial version. I really like the map choices in the backcountry navigator, but I agree, the UI is much easier in maverick. Out of curiosity, did you have issues with the full version of maverick or the free version?

Gpskit does not need cell or wifi signal it uses the embedded gps chip in the phone, I use it exclusively out in the middle of the California deserts and it's accurate as the Lowrance my buddies use. It's gotten me back to people when we've been separated. It is a iphone only app. Here is a screen shot of my Laughlin to Barstow track. It's zoomed out to see the whole track but can zoom in real close for better detail.

Hmm, I wonder if that had anything to do with it. That's odd, though, I haven't had any issues with either version (knock on wood...)

you might be right, i mightgive it a try. I haven't been able to find any satellite maps on backcountry that has labels, and the map i use often either doesn't have all the trails, or has trails that aren't there, and on forest service roads the numbering is incorrect. Its not a big problem, as its mostly a backup if i get lost or stuck to give my location relative to established roads etc, and at that it works very well.

    Just starting...
I got a Garmin Oregon 450 a few years ago. It's waterproof and uses either AA batteries or a vehicle plug-in.

Then I bought topographic maps for the West coast.

    http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-MapSource-Topographic-Washington-California/dp/B001RYFYYK/

It turns out these have the forest service road numbers on them. Discovered that on Cleghorn ridge.

I have to remember which mode I have it in. I use it on my bike as a bike computer also. If it's in bike mode when I try to navigate in a vehicle, results are rather exciting.

But for going "solo", I have the GPS on in map mode recording a track. I'm not really using it to navigate. But when I try to turn around, the track is very reassuring that I'm on the right road back down the mountain. I know I got up somehow!

Good thing this rescue wasn't needed now.
Things have definitely changed after yesterday's storm.
Snow all the way south along the Eastern Sierra. Fossil Falls has snow. Inyos, Panamints, and everything in between are coated. North and South passes into Saline are out. We tried South Pass today and the snow was knee deep as the road climbs out of Lee Flats. Darwin covered in snow. It's a great time to see Death Valley but not easy to get to Saline if that is your goal.

Man, thank goodness for the timing of the rescue. And thank goodness for the early season snow! (maybe it's not early). Hopefully this winter will bring a good snow pack. We need it!

Yes, I have one of these in my truck at all times. I sometimes bring it to work locations that are in remote areas for added safety. HAM and cellphone are my first responders when with my truck, though.

@MP Neither have I. I keep a repeater directory in my truck in case the cellphone is out. The plb is as a last resort.

Just got back from four days in the specific area where this occured. We couldn't figure out the exact location but anywhere up there is hairy. We (both vehicles) had to do multiple point turns on the road to Suitcase Mine.

edit: Seems as though the sig line doesn't have enough room for it. And I'm not in the mood right now to download, crop, and upload it.

So the much-anticipated story of my adventure is working its way here. I'm posting it up on Facebook piecemeal, and once I'm done, I'll condense it all and post here. Warning: I am overly verbose, so it's going to be a bit .......long.
