Connecting rod. Wow. I have seen them bent into "S" shapes, but have never seen one shatter.....then again, I'm not an engine builder.......must be the way they are building them in modern times?

Won't know until I have it out (should be Monday) and pull the pan. But my guess is #6/driver side rear. That's the cylinder that was completely filled with oil...#4 was only half-filled.

I figured it was the even bank.

    #4 vs #6 was a swag.

Keep that pan, you will need it for the new motor.

    Totally agree...

I'm not one to run off and be completely careless, and when offroading I certainly try to be as prepared as possible, but Its very bothersome how many people these days will trade anything for safety.... What ever happened to that adventurous spirit that was the reason for many to get in to this hobby. It was always about exploring and experiencing the unknown right, going places people don't usually get to go, or am i wrong? It feels like the last decade has been all about reprogramming us all to yearn for safety at any cost..... its a shame.

Engine is out. Good news is there is no hole in the block wall. I'll dive into it for a look-see later this week/end.

Well, the diagnosis is in. I shattered rods 4 and 6. Yes- shattered. No clean break anywhere, and at least six pieces of rod in the pan. Both crank ends were jammed into the block wall (no penetration, thankfully), which would explain why it wouldn't budge in either direction.
I'm going to be diving into it Monday afternoon with my son, so I'll get a better idea if there is further damage elsewhere.
I'll get pics up some time.

Also got the replacement engine yesterday. Huge props to Paul Murphy (HBMurphy) for putting me in contact with someone who rolled his truck to the point of totaling it.
5,000 miles on the engine, had a TRD supercharger on it before I got it (sadly, not included), and even included a factory windage-tray oil pan to replace the one that was on there when the front differential broke it in the rollover. Now I gotta see if I can adapt that pan to it (perhaps originally from a 4-runner?).
Tomorrow (Sunday before Christmas) is going to be spent cleaning the engine bay and the garage floor, then onward to putting everything back together. Almost kinda feels a bit like a fresh start.

Still need a door, door glass, side curtain airbags, and driver's seatbelt. Also could use the air filter housing or the secondary carbon (emissions) air filter (mine's been marinating in engine oil since the rollover). Anyone?

Check to see if the Side Curtain bags are different on Access and Double cabs (I have no clue). I have some for a Access cab I will sell you if they fit.

Looks like they are the same on the Ebay add, but you will want to verify.

We had a couple of those hanging around the shop that we got the engine. I think we need to make a hamster cage with them.

Picked up an air filter housing today. 50K on it but no cost to me.
Still needing seatbelt, door and/or glass, and airbags.

I will be spending New Year's getting the engine in the truck. Hope to have it 90% ready to drive by Thursday.

    Motor is in!
Found out it never even got a first oil change. Also found out the filters Toyota puts on at the factory are the more-sought-after spun synthetic media type, rather than the paper filters they use after it leaves the factory.
Second (er, main/primary) battery and Big 3 cables came in today, as well.
Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

My first indication was that the drain plug gasket was thoroughly stuck to the oil pan, because it was clean, virgin paint underneath; I remember this was exactly how mine behaved when I did its first oil change.
But the confirmation was the oil filter. I don't know how to explain it, but it was unmistakably the original filter. For one thing, it was the spun synthetic media and the concave mounting plate, rather than the pleated paper and relatively flat mounting plate we're all used to.
Plus, the little rubber plug for the drain hole on the filter mount was still there and holding strong. No one leaves that on after the first oil change.

Never having had an oil change is both good and bad in this case. Good in the sense that it's a brand spankin' new motor. Bad in that there wasn't a 500-mile change to get all the factory machining gunk out.
