Any body else have this issue? Around my gas door is very dirty. I don’t have my diff breather routed there so that’s not it. I’m thinking gas cap but I don’t have a check engine light on. Picking up a cap from Toyota tomorrow.

I noticed the same at the recent fill up. I speculated because when I wash it I don’t wash behind the little door.

I think if the gas cap isn’t sealing it’ll cause a check engine light and error code.

I don't think it is anything wrong with your truck, I believe it is just a symptom of modern gasoline.

I have noticed this on many vehicles, even outdoor power equipment and also vehicles that don't get driven for long periods of time. It is well known that modern gasoline degrades at a far faster rate than fuel years ago. The ethanol debacle has only accelerated the rate of gasoline degradation.

As long as the truck continues to run well just keep it washed and waxed around the filler -- not a bad idea to do the rest of the truck too. ;);)

The tank vents out the gas cap area when pressure is high, this is normal on all vehicles.

It's safe to open the door and wash it out.

Normal... seen this for 40+ years on all rigs. Use a brush, soap, and water to clean it 4/6 times a year. Then, enjoy your clean gas cap area...area

I updated the first post with a picture.
I'll be washing the truck today because it is filthy and I bought a soft brush just for this area.

I'll give it a good cleaning and then see how long it takes for it to get dirty.

Could the cap be venting too much? I'll be throwing a new gas cap on today and keeping an eye on it after washing the truck concentrating on this area.

Thought the CEL would light up if the cap is leaking but that sure looks like a cap leak allowing fuel to evaporate. That's a heck of a lot of dirt collected there.

I always thought it looked excessive even though I should wash my truck more.

Mine does not look like that, but my daughters Corolla is always dirty like that. She has a white car so that does not help either. I could not figure out why as I have never had a vehicle that gets so dirty inside the gas cap door.

My truck looks like that. I attribute it infrequent washes. It never use to, but I probably washed and drove it more then.

I 'm guessing dirt runs in that area when it rains. Dust and dirt probably gets kicked up between the composite bed and bedside. Maybe the Taco lean contributes in some way.

Don't overthink it, let the evap system worry about itself. It's a super finicky system, if anything was leaking it would code absolutely. That being said, replacing the gas cap every now and then isn't a bad idea. It gets used a lot, the rubber seal can get flat over time

Just wash the area like normal, no worries there

That black stuff around/under the gasoline filler door and under the hood is mold/mildew.
