The dead give-away that the dealer did the last oil change was when you mentioned the drain plug was cross threaded. Glad you got the metal housing on.

Actually curious which wrench the OP has. It looks like this only has the middle tabs broken off, mine (the OEM version) grabs onto all 3 on both sides.

Nice! Glad you were able to get it off. Let us know when you do the front and back differential gear oil change.

IMO, the main design purpose of the Tacoma oil filter is to get as many folks as possible to go to the dealer for an oil change. My dealer only charges slightly more than Jiffy Lube.

Dumb shit like this happens to me every time I do an oil change. It’s the only car “repair” I consider giving up on.

That looks pretty similar, looks like your filter housing is a bit different than mine though - the 3 tabs are bigger, like the one posted here.

My posts were geared towards the normal crowd who gets themselves into an awful situation because they don't have the correct tools or know-how. Glad you were able to get this sorted out.

Edit: nvm that only shows 3 tabs on one side. These are weird. lol.

I have the same filter housing on my tC (6+ years) as the taco and this is the first I've seen this happening.

I hear you. Part of the anxiety of this situation was that I thought I had done everything right, and ive read all the disaster posts on this forum lol. But it happened to me. Super relieved I was able to get it out without anymore damage.

I've seen a few more of these posted. Like you might feel, the reinforced nylon cartridge is not exactly to blame. I never struggled with mine, but my dealer did a good job during the ToyotaCare visits. Now, I was just under a friend's 4Runner with 50k on the odo that was serviced by the dealer in Seattle. I found a few missing fasteners and two repair fasteners on the stock skid. In my thread, it was noted that the procedure at some dealers is to have a second tech check the torque. So with the very coarse threads on the cartridge, that can put a lot of additional preload on it.

Yeah... I used to take my truck to Toyota Carlsbad... They always overtightened the filter housing to the point I couldn't get it off myself. :annoyed:

Hindsight is 20/20, let me pass it on to you. Change it out. That plastic housing is trouble.

Very frustrating. It was my one free oil change after purchasing the truck from them last June. I know better than to trust the dealer for most things, but this was certainly a lesson learned.

This exactly one i use on my 2 cars. It works fine and aligns properly with tabs.
I usually let the engine to cool off before taking the filter housing. Comes off much easier than on hot.

Motivx Oil change kit + metal oil filter housing is a great combo.

Also the best part of the metal oil filter housing is that you can really feel when you get to the end of the threads. There is a clear "stop" feeling.

More like the wrong wrench. New motivx wrench is suppose to eliminate breaking, or cracking those tabs....it only grabs the flutes.
