So yesterday i was going for a drive and some guys flagged me down for help, their suburu was hanging off the road over a steep slope. Rear driver side wheel was off the ground.

Im posting to ask, should i give this a second try?

His only recovery point was the steel tie down loop located roughly between the bullbar thing and his driver side fog light

Attempt 1, use the rear of my vehicle as an anchor point we tried to crank him sideways using a come-along winch. No dice, the winch couldnt do it.

Knowing we needed the force to go sideways i couldnt just haul him out by driving up the road so we put a towstrap around a tree (ghetto snatch block technique) but the tree came down immediately (less dramatic than it sounds) when i pulled forward.

Rollover risk seemed 50/50 so i encouraged the kid to call a wrecker. Seemed like we needed a second vehicle to act as an anchor point and needed someone with a vehicle mounted winch.

The kid’s dirt poor so i want to hep him out but i think the risk of him rolling down the hill is too high for me to just attach and yank him forward. Tow companies told him they wont do it. I told him of he buys a snatch block i would try it again.

What do you all think? I know its only one photo. Too risky to pull him without the proper angle provided by a snatch block right? Any thoughts are welcome. I wanna help this kid out but i dont want to cause damage to his vehicle or mine

Stupid awd..only one wheel was turning

Do you have any friends with a winch who could go with you? The more the merrier in this case, good luck

There's not a snowballs chance in hell I would try and recover him by going forward. That man needs to come sideways.

Here is a video showing a similar predicament and what it took to recover him.

Personally, I'd leave it to the professionals. Even if he's onboard with your plan, if something goes south, he's going to blame you. Even worse, if your truck gets damaged, he's not going to take responsibility for it. It sucks to leave it there, but you can always offer to give him a ride into town.

My thoughts exactly. I watch that channel too, Matt is probably the only reason i didnt send it down the slope last night doing something stupid. I knew the force needed to go sideways...
I’m new to the area so i dont know anyone nearby.

He needs to be anchored to another truck or at least a tree across the trail before anyone tries to pull him off that ledge.

I would try and find a couple people with winches and some recovery experience using them to come and help out. If possible keep him anchored there in the meantime in case some of the ledge gives way.

This, 100% this. It’s super unfortunate but that’s the world we live in nowadays. Let’s say something goes horribly wrong and he sues.

Now, if you were more experienced/had more gear/other friends to help then that’s one thing, but you’re setting yourself up for a bad situation.

I’d find someone that has a winch on a cradle Thing. Throw it on the back and get and straight back as you can with it. And then put the come along on the front to keep it there.

Dang that looks tricky. Seems like youd want to anchor one end very firmly, and pull up hill on the other end. Using snatch blocks anchored to very big trees obviously. Seems like a big ask for one truck, especially with no winch. Winch would just give you more control is all.

Wonder if theres some sort of volunteer org. in your area that could help out. Might try cross posting this to forum dedicated to your local area

As said previously, it needs to be anchored on the uphill side to prevent it from sliding as it gets pulled forward. The anchor does not need to be another vehicle. The fixed length anchor can rotate as its pulled forward so the car is pivoting on the anchor. A non-elastic strap or chain works well for an anchor.

I vaguely remember seeing a similar recovery on facebook. All I can remember is they pointed the recovery vehicle up the hill, ran a winch up to a tree on a block then back down to the stuck vehicle. I guess the theory is that if it slips more your rig is helped by gravity going up the hill?

    Sorry only took one pic.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I'm texting the kid and told him if he can find someone with a winch and a snatch block I'll go back and happily be the rear anchor point. (All the trees there are pretty wimpy). I'd post in the local forum but those guys are a good 2 hours from this suburu. Figured I'd just post in the 3rd gen forum to get opinion on the best course of action. Glad i was smart enough to not just say fuck it and haul him forward.

Not exactly what i was talking about earlier, but found this on the page that may have a similar recovery solution?
