Hi folks, just looking for a little feedback. I'd looked at bed covers quite a bit and finally settled on the Retrax Pro Mx. I'd seen a few around town as well as looked at the display model in the shop that I chose to purchase from. Today was install day and I was immediately a bit disappointed when I went back to pick up the truck. The cover itself seems to be high quality and I really like the operation of it, but it seems to sit up quite high off of the bed rails. The gap is filled with foam weather stripping. I haven't tested it for water resistance yet, but it just looks a bit odd to me. None of the other trucks I'd seen have this gap and the display model didn't either.
I decided to call Retrax and they told me that what I was seeing was normal for the Tacoma and that no other truck has this gap. The cover, as many of you know, isn't cheap and now it just has an unfinished look to it to me.
I don't know that anything can be done at this point, but I was just wondering if others with Retrax have noticed this too.... maybe it isn't a big deal to anyone? I dunno... just disappointed I guess.
    Any thoughts/comments/ideas appreciated.

Do you have any pictures you could post? I am looking to buy the same cover and saw a thread on here awhile back were someone was having the same issue. Thank you,

Sure, I can get a few pics and post tomorrow. I read a lot on here and never saw any negative stuff except for the occasional "not quite waterproof" type of thing. This is definitely bugging me though. I'll get some pics and post them up tomorrow.

I loved my Pace Edwards electric retractable cover and here is a pic with my old 2016 for comparison.

Thanks for the comparison. From what I can tell, the gap on mine is much bigger than what I see on the Pace.

Your cover looks really good from the pic's. I may go that route, but wanted the Retrax because they have a track rail system that will be available later this month to add bars and various attachments above the cover.

Check my video and let me know if the gap is the same.

I never had leaks. When installing it says to put some pressure on the rails before tightening.

Thanks very much for the video, from what I can tell I'd say the gap on yours and mine is about the same. From your video, it didn't seem like you had a problem with it?

I have the Gatortrax MX which is the same thing as the Retrax MX and mine definitely does not look like that! Mine does sits about a 1/4" higher towards the front vs rear on both sides but nothing like yours.. not even close. I would take it back and have them reinstall it. Sorry OP :(

to me it looks like you need to scoot up the cover a little closer to the cab. I had that weather strip right to the edge. Yours looks like 5mm short of it.

also the rear it looks like it pointing upward vs the front.

check this install vid at 7:25 you can see he puts a knee on it before tightening. that's what you need to do

Thanks guys, maybe I just have a bad install. The video definitely shows a different result than what I have. I guess I will check around... There is another shop that is a little further away. I might go by and see what they said. I'd gladly pay them for an hour of their time if they could fix it up and make it looks nice.

No Problem! All you should have to do is loosen the t-slots and apply pressure with your knee and re-tighten. Will maybe take you 10 minutes tops.

You can do that yourself. It does however use the infamous 10mm socket.

Any idea when this will be released? Where can his info be found?
Sorry for the threadjack but I was going to order a gatortrax(composite material, retractable) and am wondering if I should wait now.

If you are talking about the track rails, I was told by Tonneau World Covers they would be available later this month or early April. When I inquired about them initially, the contact on the phone actually had no knowledge about them but apparently asked someone. There is a YouTube video that shows them as they were introduced in 2017. If you search Sema 2017 Retrax Pro you will see the video. I am going to wait until they come out, but am also thinking about the Pace Edwards Ultra Groove. I went to a local distributor today and those look pretty good. The only downside on the PE is they have a spring retract system with a strap vs handle and you can only open when the tailgate is down. I would prefer to have a lock on the cover like the Retrax and operate separate from the tailgate.

    Well, just an update...
I did try to correct it myself, without any luck. I just could not get it to sit any lower.
I made an appointment and had another (further away) installer take a look at it and he could not do anything with it either. He said the canister was sitting as low as possible already - essentially sitting on the wheel wells on either side.
Unfortunately, this leaves me extremely unhappy with my purchase. I will probably contact the first installer, where I bought it, and check into a refund, but I'm not thinking that will go so great.
    Hope this helps someone else.
    Thanks,
    Shannon

I have the GatorTrax MX. Mine looks exactly the same way.

I caution you on returning it...this is really one of the best covers on the market (you get what you pay for) and it has really served me very well. I noticed the same foam gap at first and quickly got used to it. I would rather a thick foam seal that can actually keep water out than have nothing/a sleek install and have it leak.

Installed mines last weekend and have the same foam gap; it can only compress so much, but like brad I quickly got over it. The only issue I have is that the foam widths are different when comparing my left and right rail....
