Reverse indicator on dash is Red

I just bought this used 2019 Tacoma SR, 4x4 access cab truck.

I alternate my driving between the Tacoma and and Audi A3.

I'm still getting used to the Tacoma and I notice little things that make me wonder and cause me to inquire further like just recently I noticed when I put the gear shifter into reverse the dash R is red color. I noticed the other gear indicator status for P, N and D are in white color.

On my Audi, the R on dash is the same color as the other P, N and D indicators.
Is the R in red color normal for Tacoma truck?

 

My reverse turns red or orange as well. It's actually a black r with a red or orange background. Neutral is green. Similar thing. Park and drive are white

 

I’ve never really put any thought into the color of the R but if it’s red I’m sure it’s to indicate you are in reverse at just a glance.

 

as far as I can remember, every vehicle I have owned and driven (company) have had a red R. I'd guess it goes way back to when engine/trans weren't computer controlled and if you put the trans in Reverse while moving forward, it would go in to reverse and boom. So it was more of a warning.

 

To be perfectly honest the only thing I ever look at when putting any vehicle in Reverse are the mirrors and occasionally the camera screen. Too old school here, been driving without all of the bells and whistles for way too long.

 

On a related note, I just realized that my tires are black!

Had to run to Wally World so I checked and my R is orange.

 

Not only that but N is green.

Shouldn't D be green? Green means go. WTH Toyota!?!

 

2021 TRD Off-road has a Reddish Orange R for Reverse. I'm sure we probably paid extra for that because it's probably part of the "Trim" level that costs an extra Ten Grand!!!

 

I will have to check mine cause I think it is red/orange and the rest are green.

 

It means your reverse fluid is low….


Check that.

 

Mine are whitewalls. What's wrong with yours?

 

Carryover from the old days when the only markings were by the shift lever.

 

When I put my lever in reverse, the truck moved backwards and didn't make metal-on-metal destroying sounds when doing so. I decided to close my investigation and not gather further evidence after those two conditions were met.

 

Mine is the same!
What's even weirder is that the forward gears on the dash are white, and the reverse R is red like yours, but then the BACK UP LIGHTS ARE WHITE!
Come-on Toyota? Why so many colors for reverse? Can we not color coordinate so the R on the dash matches the color of the back up light too?

Next thing you know when you are in one of the forward gears that are white on the dashboard and go to brake, the lights on the back will probably turn red or something. So strange.
