So the county I live in and directly employs me changed the name of one of our parks from Sully Plantation to Sully Historic site because the word "Plantation" was racist. I want to know what you all think about this. Tell me if I am being insensitive by thinking this is absurd.

People that even have time to think about changing a name like this are ultra liberal, unemployed and living off the social tit.

On second thought, I'd be OK with the Plantation name change if I can change the name of this to "Black Mammie Jack".

    My first thought was

Is it an active plantation by definition or is a historic site?

It is not racist to me but I am not a descendant of slaves either.

Its somebody who obviously isnt educated about the souths history. Dont worry once they change one small thing, they will change more.

We had a problem with stuff like this not long ago. My towns football teams name is the Rebels. All the students fly confederate flags, blow dixie horns, and when they would get into the game they would wave their flags even more. Certain people started bitching and said it was racist and somehow it was banned.(short version). People still fly them but just cant bring em in the game. Believe it or not the majority that were against it were white parents of students. The majority of black folks weren't offended by it at all.

Next thing you know they will be tryin to change the Dixie Produce companies name because they think its racist.

Your not thinking unclearly at all. The county board where you live is.

That seems silly. Was it really changed just because of the word: "Plantation?"

Kind of a bit off-subject, but while I agree that racism in general is a bad thing, I can't tell you how ironic I find it that since I've lived out here in Cali, I've heard more supposedly forward-thinking people make really nasty comments about Southerners. I have a pretty strong accent myself and I swear so many people just naturally assume that I'm dumber than a bag of hammers. Just comes to show that racism exists in all corners.

Agreed. People seem to talk the south down a lot. Yet I see tags on cars from all over the US outside the south in my hometown a lot because they love how nice we are and we'll just stop and talk to anybody on the street or in a store etc... And theres a lot of people from all over the US movin here because of that. I think theres quite a large group of people that do talk down about the south like you mentioned, but they are more than likely ignorant and have never been here to experience our way of life for themselves. They just watch the beverly hillbillies and use that to classify.

btw- you said you had an accent. what part of the south you from?

I'm from Knoxville. Grew up along Clinton Highway if you know where that is. Its also funny that you mention that so many people are moving there. Pretty soon there won't be many Southerners left since everyone there will be from NJ, NY, or MA. At least that's what my Grandmother says.
