Just a Torx driver. He includes an Allen key with it. I know what you mean about the plug. There is a little bulge in mine where the plug sits, but the mirror is high enough to hide it.

Dude, the back of your mirror has two adjustable ball/socket assemblies. Take a look and move the arm that's between them and angle it up higher.

wow I definitely didn't realize that. mine's been about 3/4 of an inch below the headliner as well and I've still been super stoaked about moving the mirror up

I got it in. I left the white plugs out. It looked like there was too much stress on the wires where they enter the plugs as I tried to position them under the headliner. I just reused two of the plastic covers to somewhat hide the plugs and wires. I'm happy with it. It's a good upgrade and well engineered. Very nice fit and finish. Checks in the mail for #845. Thanks Mr. Yo

Another option is what I did. I didn't like the plug under my headliner either so I left the plug and black cover attached to the mirror and just trimmed my headliner alittle so they fit up into it. Resulted in a super clean factory look.

How do I acquire one of the brackets? I'd be more than happy to send a prepayment.
