It's a public road with some small private sections and private (pissy) people living on it, the entrance is known by anyone with a map. This road in particular can't be blocked completely because there are residents that live on it.

Yes Jeep forums, Rover forums, etc forums, all have posted and entertained Organized Events (Red Clay Rally, Winter Safari, etc) and taken more vehicles through. The only thing that can be done to save areas like this (for our use) is for them to become privately owned and organized into legitimate OHV/ORV areas, i.e. Uwharrie OHV trails, Brown Mountain, etc.

Deleting this single thread, or never creating it will not have helped.

Not to mention - once a couple guys hear about it they tell their friends, and cycle repeats...eventually everyone knows about it, whether it is on the internet or not.

There are many old state abandoned roads all throughout the east coast that have become "off-road" trails now. Private parks for this is a great way to be able to keep the ability to go have some fun off-road alive. Publicly/Gov't owned and ran properties can always without reason or just cause be shut down. Tellico was shut down due to to much traffic and people trashing the place (I know there is debate about this, this is the reason given for shutting down).

Tellico was shut down due to sedimentation and the USFS not wanting to fight a legal battle with TU. Ironically last year they ran another test and there was no difference with the sedimentation. Supposedly even with the trails removed.

I will agree that now that just about everyone knows about this trail that by removing the maps would help much. The damage has been done over the past 5 years. But this thread doesn't help. Having big groups going through doesn't help. Pissing off the residents even more doesn't help. Eventually it will get graded or made to where only residents can go. If that is what you want just keep acting like you can't make a difference. I'm proof you can. You can work with the residents and the government to keep roads open and as long as you're willing to do the work. Don't sweep it under the rug and assume someone else will do it for you. Every little bit will help.

That is why I said there is a whole political thing with tellico. Because there were many privately done surveys that said whether you shut down the trails or not you have erosion control issues that need to be dealt with. They have to do erosion control and spend the $$$ the sad thing is the whole area lost over $4 million in rev. from the OHV being shut down. Some of the issues were in areas other than the OHV and they were blamed on OHV. My main point was that if gov't controls it then they can shut it down for whatever reason they feel fit no matter if there is truth or not. The only way that Richland Rd can be shut down from the public is for them to privatize that Rd to the people who live off of that rd. I am sure they could do some other things none come to mind right now.

They will just grade and gravel. Just like they have done on most roads. They can also put a sign up stating no thru traffic. Then a police officer can write tickets all day long.

I am not sure if they can do that so easily in NC other than for construction. I guess it all depends on state and local gov'ts and the authorities given to them and if it is a state or local rd. Good point though, interesting assessment. I am not sure how often they grade and gravel "forgotten" rds in SC but at least in NC that is last priority. The rd our family property in NH is on is like Richland Rd and the state has no interest in doing anything with it because budget. The logging company we use to harvest the timbers comes out of their pocket to just get it good enough to get their equipment and trucks in and out.

I’ll be in Hickory Saturday near the river on 321.

Might be worth a quick drive up to check it out.

I have not been able tof ind a single thing about the EPA shutting it down! Usually when BLM, EPA, NFS, etc. come in and shut down a rd way, land whatever there is information like a big sign posted, information via their website or some other for besides just word of mouth. I would venture to guess without some hard evidence that this may just be rumor.

It doesn't really make sense also because that is technically a public rd. Vehicles will have the right to go on it, now that it is one that has been "forgotten" about there is a possibility that they could enforce the necessity for you to have proper tags and licensing to travel on it, again that will hinder the SxS and other non registered vehicles.
