Weight over the drive wheels is why.

I prefer RWD, with FWD you get some understeer, with RWD you get oversteer, i counter oversteer 100x better than understeer.

I once saw a Ford Windstar towing a popup camping trailer up a moderately steep gravel driveway leading to a campground. He had to be towed up the driveway after coming to a stop with his front wheels spinning in the gravel. That's enough reason for me.

I suppose if a front wheel drive vehicle was desired for simplicity, and still needed to tow/haul at times, a transfer case that was front wheel drive with fulltime four wheel drive as an option would work well.

There were a bunch of hills in my hometown back in the day (70s and 80s) that would look JUST like this if they had cameras on them.

I love watching idiots attempt to drive and flail...er, fail. Wait, it works either way on that one.

Agreed. FWD is truly automotive blasphemy. Excess front end weight, torque steer, blah, blah, blah.

If you just want an econobox, a FWD 4 banger makes complete sense, like my wife's CRV. Just not much fun to drive.

what kind of crack are you on. fwd is better than rwd because there is more weight over the drive wheels. it is that simple. up to a point weight= traction, with no weight over the rear of a truck in 2wd the ass end is just squirely. also noted was that the front wheels pull the car along. vs the back wheels in 2wd which can "walk out" from behind the vehicle

but weight shifts to the rear on acceleration, thus, it's useless to have a 300+ hp FWD car because it's just going to sit on it's ass burning rubber.

RWD cars gain traction on acceleration with weight shift, and the front wheels traction is dedicated to turning and braking, whereas the rear wheels are dedicated to acceleration.

i have heard this before, and honestly i dont think there is enough "weight shift" when accelerating in the snow to throw enough extra traction to the rear to make any significant difference.

This has got to be one of the silliest things I've read on this forum...

If you see 4x4 trucks/SUV's in the ditch it's because they probably were trying to avoid/go-around all the FWD vehicles stuck or barely moving on the roadway.

Or else it's the soccer-moms & dim-witted dads who think "4x4 or AWD" means they can run all-season tires on their truck/SUV in the winter...

x2 i hate when thats all i hear in the winter. "its always all of the 4wd trucks in the ditch"

you dense mother fucker thats because thats all that was able to make it out of their god dam neighborhood. the proportion of little 2wd cars to trucks goes down when the roads turn to shit!

I agree, FWD are great in the snow, but RWD arent horrible unless driver error. If it's snowing in the mountains, and I have to choose between my scion tC or my truck with 2wd only, im gonna choose my truck. I can control over steer, but I hate torque steer.

Feather the throttle anf clutch in instead of braking

I like either , they are just different

I learned to drive in the snow in my 4 speed 1977 Honda Civic , then I got a 1977 VW Rabbit diesel , haha , a bunch of RWD cars next

Later I got a 1990 manual Ford Ranger 4x4 and finally my Tacoma

The trend is towards FWD cars one reason being the rear wheel drive stuff is all but done they are cheaper to operate and are getting a lot better suited for police work better suspension etc. Biggest complaint I have heard is interior room.

you still have more control RWD, FWD was a gimmick for bad drivers, most euro cars are rwd, only a handful are still FWD.

Guess you have never watched the Maine Woods rally or the Mt Washington hill climb where 300+ HP FWD's are pretty routine. The weight shift is not great enough to off set the entire drive train sitting on the wheels.

honestly in the snow idk if i would choose my truck over the xB simply because i've been in both and they are both fun on snow and ice. especially in the xB when you pretty much steer with the e-brake :D
