I'm going to be taking a trip up to Clayton next weekend for some camping along the Tallulah River. Do you guys know of any good trails around that area? We won't be far from Tate City.

Charlies Creek should be close to there. And if you're ballsy enough you can hit Bell Mountain before they take it down

    Thanks for the heads up.

I don't really know anything about that area. Are there any nearby addresses or GPS coordinates for the trailheads to those two?

Okay, awesome. So Charlie's Creek Rd. actually runs into Tate City: https://www.google.com/maps/place/C...2!3m1!1s0x8858d4a9bd6a681b:0x691358dfb26f70a1

Bell Mtn. looks to be near Hiawassee. That's in the area but not sure if I'll make it during the weekend trip.

Is Charlie's creek pretty mild? I'll have a stock TRDOR 4x4 loaded down with camping gear and 3 other passengers.

Yeah Bell is in Hiawassee. I wouldn't recommend Bell I was just messing. You need somebody to go with you and some armor. Charlie's Creek is easy even @The Tarvis and his damn turd gen made it fine

Patterson gap is a nice ride. You could do it in a subaru but it's still a fun drive with good views.

How was the trip and where'd you end up going? My buddy and I are heading up May 6th in the same area if the weather isn't too bad. Thinking about staying at Tate Branch campground and hitting Charlie's creek, maybe Patterson gap but looking for other fun rides. Did you find anything up there?

The trip was great! We made it to Clayton around 12PM Saturday and stopped by Tallulah Gorge, Blackrock Mountain, and grabbed a bite to eat at one of the Mex restaurants in Clayton. Unfortunately that set us back to hitting the national forest around 430PM and by that time EVERY single campsite was taken in the Tallulah River site, Sandy Bottom site, and Tate Branch site. So we decided to pass through Tate City and cross over into North Carolina. All of the campsites on the NC side were vacant, with an added bonus that you don't have to pay to stay at them. We found a spot just before the dead end and had it all to ourselves all night and Sunday. It was so beautiful up there. Our tent was about 15' from the edge of the river.

Sunday we left out around 12 and my intent was to hit the Charlie's Creek trail on the way out, but time got the best of us and we had to be home by 5PM so I didn't have time to tackle the full trail. I did do the river crossing and went as far as the 2nd turnaround point so I think I missed the vast majority of the trail. It seemed well graded, but was narrow and slightly overgrown. If I would have gone much farther there would have been some unavoidable trail pin stripes. The creek crossing was fun, did it again on my way back out of the trail.

Overall a really awesome trip. I highly recommend it. Clayton is such a beautiful area.

Some pics from Bend N Hickory Trail near Toccoa... We walked it last year to assess the the conditions - Which are pretty damn rough!

I wouldn't take my truck through it, but there are lots of YouTube videos of folks doing it.

These pics were from Feb 2015. One thing to keep in mind is how bad these trails can get in a short period of time...

Lots of rain + lots of use + highly erodable soils = trails that get rutted out fast!

Damn wish i would have known you were coming up. i live in Clayton. Charlies creek used to be a bit of a mess, USFS came in and graded it late last year in made it much more usable for people, but not as fun for hardcore offroaders. Tray mountain is also like an hour and change from here and there is a group of guys that hit that at least 2 times a year. I havent taken my truck out in anything since the baby but i would love to hit some trails this summer and go camping.

That's awesome, too bad you didn't get to do a little more trail riding. I didn't think it'd be that bad up there! in that case, we might just go on up to North Carolina. Thanks for the in depth coverage! I'll try to give the same detail on my trip summary.

We won't be able to leave until North atlanta until about 6 most likely so it'll be slim pickings by the time we get there anyway. I plan on taking Charlie's Creek rd into Tate. Has anybody else done the whole trail on here?

Damn that looks fun! Only if it hasn't rained in a few weeks. I've seen videos where its complete slosh. Within the first 5 minutes they had to winch themselves out of a huge mud hole :puke:

Probably won't be going there anytime soon, its gone to shit. Far worse than those pics
