To me the issue isn't that he is a veteran with the MOH. I think anyone should be allowed to fly the American Flag from a flag pole in their front yard if they want to. Veterans and non Veterans alike.

There is no way a flag pole with the American Flag flying from it is going to lower anyone's property value. If anything it makes it a better looking neighborhood.

To argue rules are rules is a valid point. When we begin to arbitrarily decide which are to be obeyed and which ignored we have a problem. The HOA has every right to govern their community, as those living there have the right to leave. What does disturb me in this situation is some consideration should have been given to this gentleman. While technically he may be wrong, and it seems he is, it certainly is sad that his contributions to our country don't seem to be enough in the eyes of the HOA to grant him an exemption in this case.

this is right down the street from where i live....if they rule against him leaving it up...I will donate $120 to pay the $10 a month fee for him to leave it up for another year and there are many other already willing to do the same...to hell with HOAs...its not that he is flying the flag b/c its a federal law against prohibiting someone to fly the American Flag...its the manner in which he is flying it....

Another thing to add to this whole debate is the symbolism and the whole ceremony of raising the flag onto the pole. We as military members salute the flag while ascending and descending the flag pole. I was in the Honor Guard while serving in active duty and I have seen all sides of this flag, I have seen funerals, weddings, parades, retirements, and other ceremonies. When you see the flag being methodically raised or lowered all of these feeling rush you and hit you like a billion pounds. And unless you have done this yourself you have never experienced the myriad of emotions that hit you. maybe he feels this every time and would gladly fight for this feeling.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Well said Matt. One of the greatest moments of my life was finishing the Crucible on The Island. On the last night, the company was humping back to the barracks. We ended up coming out of the woods at dawn into a little plaza like area with a flag pole in the middle. There, stood Ol' Glory at the top of the pole waving her glory with Lee Greenwood's "Proud to be an American" playing in the back ground over a loud speaker. To this day I have trouble keeping composure when that song is played.

It's little moments like that, that strike chords in the hearts of veterans. It is what makes us react the way we do. To those who say "It's just a flag pole", to us it isn't.

I'm not going to sit here and explain myself very far, but I don't care wether its the flagpole, or flag, they are both symbolic. It's not even that big of a pole to be bitching and complaining about.

Regardless the old man won't live for that much longer, why not give him what makes him happy everyone morning when he wakes up instead of making the last few years of his life miserable. People nowadays have no fucking tact, its why I hate where I live now, and why I hate the east coast in general. Fucking hell.

    This makes me laugh....

And once again (and I've said this before somewhere)

You believe that just because people who serve our country have more rights than the rest of us??

**this thread has gotten soooo overbloated with crap that doesn't even pertain to the actual subject at hand. Non of us truely know the details of the situation and its been blown totally out of proportion by the media. Yeah...Americans... look at us... 8 pages of Americans argueing amoungest themselves about American pride.

Seriously... it's not about the flag, it's about the pole. You're one of the people I was talking about w/ my previous post.

    Thank you for being sane.

I salute all of this!!!!!!!!! Proper respect for what has been provided to those who would now dilute, abuse, dismiss, take for granted & stain the sacrifices that got us here today is one the most lost & saddest things about this country nowdays. Just fucking shameful.
